he has an ALK, subarus need more caster than they come with stock.

Oh god, the infamous VW GTI frame notch. Cutting up your frame so you can get teh lowz. Stupid.

When I told my MKV GTI/GLI forum I was going to WRX, oh it was quite the uproar. They get real butthurt about their FWDz there.

What about Porsche, which is generally reliable, and their IMS failures. Knock on wood, but no issues here and with the cars I know. Generally, most issues I've seen are from modded cars. I'm not saying that the motor is 100% perfect either, but the issue is blown out of proportion. At least to the point of taking a loss on the car relative to the actual risk. There are far more legitimate reasons to switch (want something new, more luxurious, lower insurance, fuel efficient, etc).

The new 2.0 does not quite relate either, though I am excited for the 2015 unveiling.
