I got the same dent, same place . Got quoted 800+ said he had to paint the entire side of the car to blend it.

I'll live with a tiny dent than painting the entire side of my new car

Generally Sti's are more commonly known for their ringland issues. Although WRX's also have their own issues.

thats what makes it even more pathetic..the STi is supposed to be the tough track car and the 6speed that can hold power..so why do you need such a stout 6speed if the motor cant even handle the stock power before blowing up..So glad i changed my mind and got a WRX over a STi. Still not all that excited owning the WRX either though

If you're this upset about owning a Subaru, sell it at a loss to someone who will appreciate it and love it, and buy yourself a Mazdaspeed 3.

They're the same motors and the same pistons.

It's not that it can't handle the power. It's the stock tune. Have you ever seen a baseline dyno graph of and STi or WRX? That is was really is pathetic. The only reason they blow up is:
1. Misuse
2. Lemon
3. Improper maintainence (which I guess goes with misuse)
4. And putting down way to much power to handle.
They will hold a solid 100 whp/wtq over stock (rule of thumb), but that's when you start comprimising the longevity of your motor. Basically they do really well fully bolted on, but when you start throwing big turbo on them, they go.
More DGM whore-age ... I know they'r reposts but IDGAF

Kind of a crappy response. I mean it's kind of true. The ringland issues are a little ridiculous. Haven't experienced it first hand though. I'd be furious though if it happened to me.

Hotboxedsubaru is in Alaska right? I would suspect that the reason for his ring land failure would be a combination of the extremely lean stock tune, the lower octane fuel availability in Alaska, and the propensity for piston failure on these engines. All of these factors together probably contributed to the ring land failure. On the 2011 and 2012 the flatline the AFR hits between 3-5K RPMs is pretty ridiculous.
