So you'd believe him if he had a flashy website? Glare is glare, even if the website was written in 2003 vs 2012, and it's still that your pupils will adjust to the additional near-field light even if the article was written in 1937...

And I'm not saying to uninstall the fog lights. I'm saying you should only turn them on when it's so foggy your main headlights are causing glare and you can't see any more - the situation fog lights are designed for! Have you ever been in a snowstorm or in fog where you switch on your lights and you literally can't see anything except the snow or fog? THAT is when you're supposed to use fog lights. Not when you're driving down the road at night and want to look cool by having four lights on instead of two.

All factory built cars I've seen can't operate fog lights without headlights being on at the same time. So yes, factory fog lights are pointless unless you rewire them to operate without the headlights.

Subaru fogs only turn on when you have the low beams on from what I've seen. Factory fogs also don't do very much in some cars. It's really noticeable in my parents' 08 Forester and basically pointless in the 09 Legacy sedan. That's part of the reason why I'm hesitant to get fogs for the WRX. It just doesn't seem like a good way to spend $350 bucks, give or take.

I haven't tried with my 2012 STi, but in my '87 Volvo 740 the fogs will turn on if you switch the headlight switch to 'park'.

It would be really @#$%ing stupid if they didn't work like that, lol.

But then again, American lighting regulations made the same Volvo have 2 horrible sealed-beam headlights on each side instead of one giant glass reflector like on the European cars - because the bulb wasn't OK for US market use yet - even though light output was like 40% and there was MORE glare for oncoming cars. Ahh, progress.

Conjecture:
A high percentage of automobiles designed for use in North America on public roads do not come equipped with fog lights designed for pure functionality. The foglight option is an extra provided to the consumer, and a reason for the manufacturer to gain profit from an addition that is mainly cosmetic. Its obvious that a majority of consumers do not know or care about the optics involved with their automobile lighting. Many drivers will get very little help from their fogs if they are such inclement weather. Probably why most vehicles that actually need to have visibilty are equipped with aftermarket lighting.

If you have a vehicle equipped with factory auxillary lighting, the owner should do as they please. Be aware of state and local laws about the use and integration and or omission of lights and operation.

I don't believe him because I've been paying attention to fog lights on oncoming cars since this convo started and they are no where near as blinding as the headlights, built in fog lights on newer cars are there for mostly cosmetic reasons, they don't do much for you and they don't really bother other drivers either. I was driving with mine off today and I really can't tell the difference. Now a truck with serious functional fog lights should keep them off during normal driving because those do tend to bother your eyes.

The new Prius' have some blinding fogs/DRLs. They look like they're HID and aimed right at the sky. Not sure what's going on there.

^ lol they use LED's now for fog/drls i think. Bright as a mofo! but seems like new cars these days are all going that route. Like Celery said, it's more for cosmetics than function. I don't notice anything different when I turn my fogs on, so I don't even use them..

oh for ****s sake. you can't change how people are and what they do. people will still put cheap HID's into halogen housings and drive with foglights on. leave it at that. i'll admit i like it for looks because i've tried and can't tell when they are on OR off in the sti and hte brz now. they are purely there for looks and there is no way to have them on STOCK without having headlights on.

i wish i had more pictures to post but sadly i got nothing fresh to re-edit of my gone sti.

HOWEVER someone bought it three days after i traded it in...WHO ARE YOU MYSTERY PERSON. when i see it i will know its mine 100%

I actually managed to track a few of my old cars down with their vin numbers. My 2000 Celica GT-S was exported to russia where they had installed lambo doors on it..lol. I actually mailed the guy my spare key to see if it was really mine and he put a vid on youtube of him starting it with my key...lol. Had to use google translate to read the russian forum. My rsx just ended up being crashed by some idiot in nassau county ftl.

since that was highly off topic I will find a pic to post now.
