According to the NYS DMV site (I'm also in NY) you can have up to 30% tint:

"Section 375 (12-a) of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law does not allow a windshield or front side windows that are dark. The windshield and front side windows cannot block more than 30% of the light."

I once got pulled over in my Evo (not sure what % tint it had) and the cop gave me a hard time about the tint, but didn't use a light meter (and ended up giving me a ticket for loud exhaust)

blocking 30% of the light is 70% tint I believe

30% tint blocks 70% of light

yup. I spend $150 to have my windows tinted to 35% *im in Missouri* and i can't stand how light they are. It was a huge waste of money in my eyes. I'd like 15-20% but i didn't want the tickets

So we've basically just established that we're all a bunch of rebels and that I was at the wrong place at the wrong time with the highest tint charge known to man. haha

Dealer installed it. If a LEO bugs me about it, I'll remove it, but I'll leave it until then.

The only color I like the chromed out headlights on is black. Same deal with my OBP 2007 WRX; I always liked the contrast. (I am a firm believer in the red taillight tint though)

But of course I order a 2012 WRX in white, and never noticed the headlight change until afterwards.

Looks like they will be going off to Lightwerkz...

I doubt I'll be getting a new one any time in the foreseeable future. I went back and found most of the pieces yesterday, so I'll just try and patch it up somehow.

I have 35 all around and am very satisfied. It can look light/dark depending on the angle/time of day. I honestly don't think I'd go 20 even if it was legal in VA.

I also have 35 all the way around and I like it. I had 5% on my last car and it sucked any time after the sun went down. Not to mention the 3 fix-it-tickets in 4 days after i got it.

Impreza WRX Tickets

NYPD have the lite meters now and they stand on the corners looking for cars with dark tints, so they can write tickets. My brother has about 8 of them so far on his RX8.

Almost got mased 2 years ago when I was in NY for loud exhaust when my car was still registered in FL, I refused to take the ticket and he threw it in the car. (If they dont have a sound meter the ticket has no weight in court an just will be thrown out.)

One of the great things about Florida, no hassle for tint.

They are 17" Rota Tarmac 2's, 17 X 7.5 e48 with 215/50R17 winter tires. I like the way my car looks in the winter better than in the summer (stock wheels) haha.

Here is the official word per NY State...

(1) the front windshield of which is composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent unless such materials are limited to the uppermost six inches of the windshield; or
(2) the sidewings or side windows of which on either side forward of or adjacent to the operator's seat are composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent; or
(3) if it is classified as a station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible and any rear side window has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent; or
(4) the rear window of which is composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent. A rear window may have a light transmittance of less than seventy percent if the vehicle is equipped with side mirrors on both sides of the vehicle so adjusted that the driver thereof shall have a clear and full view of the road and condition of traffic behind such vehicle.

So technically in NY you can put dark tint on the rear window but would have to stay very light on the sides of your car.

On topic...
