Default Chevy To ID Its Cars With Eco-Impact Labels

Quote:
General Motors’ Chevrolet division will begin labeling its cars for their “cradle to grave” environmental impact, beginning with the model-year 2012 Sonic subcompact and extending across its entire model line for 2013.

Chevy says it’s the first automaker to identify its cars in this manner, which gives buyers an insight into how environmentally friendly a given model is with regard to manufacturing, driving and recycling. Pegged “Ecologic,” the information presented on the stickers will be verified by an independent third-party sustainability agency called Two Tomorrows that provides auditing and assurance services to companies for environmental initiatives.

Specific information will be presented on the environmental impact of the vehicle’s manufacturing and assembly (called “Before the Road”), the use of fuel-saving features like advanced engine technologies, slipperier aerodynamics or low-rolling resistance tires (“On the Road”) and how much of the vehicle can be recycled at the end of its useful life (“After the Road”).

Click here for a look at the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic’s Ecologic label.
“Customers want companies to be honest and transparent about their environmental efforts and sustainability goals, and rightly so,” says GM North America President Mark Reuss. “Putting an Ecologic label on each Chevrolet is just one more way for us to share our environmental progress.”

It’s certainly a step in the right direction and one that places GM, currently tripping over its own shoelaces in the wake of the Chevrolet Volt combustion issues, back in a favorable light among the eco-friendly crowd. More information on the initiative can be found here on GM’s Ecologic microsite.

More information for consumers is never a bad idea, but don't think most people will care.

I hate the taking of basic info and re-wrapping it up in a green package like someone just got a heart from the wizard of Oz or something.

To me, it's a waste of paper.
