Question Cracked windshield

With less than 5K miles on my 2001 RS I got a crack on the pass. side of my windshield . It looked like it went from the "a" pillar in towards the center. My first thought was that it was a stress crack so I took it to the dealer. They pointed out a tiny little speck located on the blacked out part of the windshield that is only an 8th of an inch wide. The guy said that that area around the outside is the thinnest part of the windshield and that any hit in this area will result in a crack . Since then I have been hit by two more small stones in the middle and both have produced big bullet hole looking marks! I drove my 93 Dodge Shadow up and down the same roads for 7 years without a mark. Are Subaru windshields prone to cracks and chips?

That's a good question. It's been so long since I've driven anything other than Subarus that I can't remember it being a problem before. I've replaced 3 windshield on 3 different Subs in the last 5 months. My WRX with 1400 miles just got it's first chip. It totally pisses me off too.

The service guy told me that Subaru knows about this but doesn't feel the need to change it. It's $100 to have my insurance put a new one in, but will I have the same problems?

It sounds like it from what your saying.

Not only do I have 3 stone chips (no cracks yet, thank god) my windshield is heavily pitted.

No other vehicle I've owned has done this, and I've been in this area for some time so it's not like the gravel on the roads is new.

Subaru windshields simply suck.

Very interesting. Among my rash of
frustrating early warranty issues, was a cracked windshield. (This at approximately 3,000 miles).

It started in the black area of the driver's side, about 6 inches from the bottom.

The dealer and their glass company inspected it closely and found no chip or point of impact, even in the black area. It was
called a "stress crack".
It was replaced free of charge under warranty; but I wonder if they were so agreeable since
I had quite a few other warranty problems as well.

I find it interesting that the winshields appear to be fragile on our cars; as others, I have driven previous cars for 60-70,000
miles with no windshield problems. Even chips on my previous VW's and BMW didn't
spread into a crack. Possibly Subaru's windshield supplier needs to be re-evaluated?

I think I'm going to have to agree with you on that one!

I might just wait until the damn thing is so full of holes, chips and cracks that I can't see through it anymore, then get it replaced.

I've had my 2.5 RS since December of 1998 with no cracks or chips at all. I'm about to replace it because it is pitted out from being pelted by winter gravel, but other than that, it has held up very well. My wife's Chevy 1500 gets a new windshield almost yearly, so I'd say the RS windshield is doing very well.

I had my WRX for 9 days before I got a chip in my windshield. My insurance company filled in the chip for free.

I've never had a chip in a windshield before ever on any car, and I get one that quick on the WRX. Ugh.
