Default 2015 wrx Loud bang!

hey guys,

2015 wrx 600 miles

well the other day i was merging onto a small highway here in town, and i took off smooth in 1st gear gave it a small pull till 4-5k and shifted to second.

when i shifted to second i heard a huge bang on the firewall. like something smacked the firewall behind the engine or behind the dash. i popped the hood to see if the pitch stop mount broke but i couldnt see much...

anyone ever have this issue before?

That would be considered what the experts call "a bad thing". If you haven't noticed any other noises since then and the car is still driving and handling normally, I'd almost guess that you just hit a NJ pothole, thought it was from the firewall, and are freaking out because it's a new car.

Bring it in to the dealer for them to check it out. it's unlikely that you had something physically break and hit your firewall without causing major other issues.

Did you check the exterior of your car to see if maybe the noise was actually something hitting the car? I assume the noise can't be reproduced. If it can, use your warranty and get the car to your dealership and have them check it out.

This sounds eerily familiar to what happened to me. Have someone inspect the engine mounts. For me, if I did a pull where the engine was making torque and I let off, put the clutch in etc, I would hear a metallic snapping sound. Turns out the drivers side engine mount was loose. And the torquing of the engine was making the noise. Once it was tightened back up everything was fine.

rough shift? I did that a couple times in my '02 and it sounded like a big rock flying up from the rear end (not the firewall, though).

Did it pop out of gear? Might just be you weren't fully in gear and it popped out. When it does that it can be very startling but car is probably fine.

It's called a rock. Chances are you ran over one, it bounced off the ground and hit something underneath.

I second this. Check the a pillar near the windshield. My caught a bolt from the highway and it sounded like someone dropped a stainless steel sink on the roof. Reverberation could be felt in my thigh bones. Left a good half inch deep gash in the metal.

Why be so arrogantly absolute when you haven't even seen the road or were there?

Because if the noise the OP heard was truly loud enough to be a LOUD BANG on the firewall, there are very few things attached to the firewall that wouldn't caust massive other issues and be 100% noticeable.

As for the road conditions, you're kidding right? Do you see every stone on the road while you're driving? Especially when you're "taking off" as the OP was? I'm paying more attention to the car, the revs, and the surroundings to notice a little rock in the road. Unless the OP was on a freshly cleaned carrier deck, I don't need to see the road to know that it's possible he ran over a rock.

I've driven at highway speed and had one of my tires fling a golf ball sized rock at the fender liner of my car. I ducked and then looked around to see who was shooting at me. I don't believe OP is 100% certain that what he heard was the firewall being struck. Probably sounded like it but anything being hit in the front of the car can sound closer to the driver that it actually is.

It's likely drivetrain bind. My WRX does it on rare occasion on the 1 to 2 shift, my old Maxima 5mt did it on occasion, my old CRX SI did it too.

It's a new car. You can just take it to the dealer and tell them what happened. Let them trouble shoot the issue. Maybe they find something. Maybe they find nothing. Either way, it's a little piece of mind against the idea a factory worker didn't tighten down the engine mounts or something.

when you sign up to be a guinea pig for a new Subaru engine, do they require you to actually dress up like a guinea pig?

I usually feel like when someone is using words like 'smooth' and 'small pull' in describing how they were driving, it is an attempt to downplay what really happened.

It's amazing sometimes how people can diagnostic a problem without being physically there just by someone's description of the events (smell, noise, vibration etc) and amazingly enough, some do have LOTS of knowledge to rule out what it's not and come to a conclusion of what it is..... You get to know these people and unfortunately they do sound arrogant sometimes. Not sure why though , I'd like to know.....BTW, these people are not offended when answered back in the same manner.

Anyways to stay on topic:

It's probably not your case but I hit a small stone in the corner of my windshield not long ago (with my Outback) and the noise was soooo loud I thought something had exploded. Turned out the lower left corner of the windshield cracked. It took me a while to spot the crack and I was going to pull over to inspect the car. If it wasn't for a crack in the windshield , I would of had pretty much your reaction. Never saw the stone coming btw.

For peace of mind , have the engine mount checked but chances are it's some kinda debris hitting your car....

By new engine, you mean one that was first available in JDM MY 2012 vehicles, so technically available in 2011. There are auto makers who retire engines faster than this engine has been available!

my mistake, less than 4 years should prove it is a reliable piece.
