Transmission was binding at low speeds for a little while and later began making a rumbling/rattling noise when engine braking. Before I stopped driving it still shifted and drove fine. When I drained the fluid there was a good amount of fine metal shavings in it.

Transmission was removed at 95k miles

Did some disassembly, here's what I found;

bearing on the output shaft? is damaged, although the case looks fine

center diff appears to be chewed up on the outside

debris i found in that portion, may have caused the damage?

some more crud leaked from here, are the fragments recognizable from a gear or diff?

i'll keep going if there is still interest

Still haven't gotten there so I don't know if it's any good. Anyone know how to split the last part of the case?

I'm guessing you have all the bolts out... there is a plate that goes around 1 of the shafts that has 4 bolts that holds the 2 halves together.. and the wishbone mount on the top of the bell-housing. Than just take your time and split it.
