Default Gas smell... 1997

I have a 97 legacy (outback) that has random issues of gas smell. I can smell it inside the car and out, but not all the time. When it does the fuming, the gas cap has no pressure. When there is not fumes the cap has pressure.

I am putting the cap on all the way. Sometimes it does not happen until days after I fill up.

Anyone got any suggestions for me to look into?

If the tank doesn't have pressure then the vapors are going to come from elsewhere in the fueling system. Can't say I'm as familiar with it as I should be, but it's possibly the purge valve for the evaporative canister.

I'm not sure how much this has changed from the older cars, but it's probably very close:

Do you know if you're losing any gas? The fuel filler neck likes to rust out on our older legacys. Check it even if you're not losing gas.

Does this happen in cold weather only or even when it is warm out? When I worked as a Subaru Service advisor we would see this a lot in the colder months and the clamps on the fuel hoses in the engine area were always the culprit.

I had to replace my gas tank because there was rust or whatnot on the lines feeding into the tank. Has the gas smell sometimes. You may want to check into this as well
