Default oil change interval

as it say, i have a 07 wrx and since i got the car back in 07 ive been doing oil changes ever 3728 miles, now i see on the new sti/wrx brochure saying with synthec you can go every 6213 miles before an oil change, when i told the dealer this, i got a response saying my car is a 07 and that the 2010/2011 are not the same engine , can some one elaborate on this?

it was my understanding that the engine has been the same for 20+ years and the only difference between mine and the new ones are the turbo, inter cooler, plastic intake mani.

i know the new fb is going to be different.

you are using what synthetic? i run shell rotella t6 in my 08. im stretching my oil change this time to 5k miles. also the only impeza with the fb2.0 engine is the 2012 impreza. all the wrx and sti models are all still the same. the 2011 to current forester also has an fb engine but its a 2.5 liter. my wife has one. what filters are you using??

the dealer would use subaru filters then. the reason is subaru filters have a special spring pressure to allow oil to bypass when it is cold. i think its set at 23 psi.

i see, i guess i still dont get it, if these cars have the same engine, why would one be required to change oil in half the time, besides the 07 came with smaller turbo so if anything my car theoretically should be allowed to go longer if anything since it would have less power...

this is why. the new wrx and sti come with 5w30 synthetic oil from the factory. you have to use synthetic oil with every oil change now. previous year pre2011, wrx and sti are not required to use synthetic oil. i personally use rotella t6 15w40 year round. it holds up excellent. it doenst turn to water like 5w30 oils. i will never got to 7500 miles between oil changes. i dont care what subaru says. i own the car not them. go in the unabombers manifesto post and look up oil info. rotella is recommended more than any other oil on this site.

They also say to follow schedule B if you fall in the harsh driving category, which most people do... so 3750 mile intervals.

Your theory notwithstanding, smaller turbos are more likely to be constantly making boost than larger turbos which puts more heat into the engine.

More heat in engine = tougher on the oil = more frequent changes.

No such oil exists. T6 is 5W-40, period.

When I hit 3000 miles I am buying new oil and getting the old out of there. Right or wrong. As others have mentioned the change interval does have to do with driver habits as well.

5-6k miles with Fram XtraGuard. Oil tests come back clean still.

Stick with using synthetic oil.
You, we'll, be safe changing it anywhere from 3500-4k mi.
Engine is the life of the car, and even if i drove a beater car i wouldnt stretch it past 5000mi.

I switch between Total Quartz 5w40 and Rotella T6 5w40, and change my oil around 3500-4k mi.

You don't come to the S&M forum much, eh? It's a mixed fleet oil and meets API CJ-4 for diesel engines and API SM for gasoline engines. More info here.
