Wow, didn't stay up for this one but have seen the reply many times this morn. How the NFL can sit by and allow the credibility of the games to be tarnished like this speaks volumes about the current leadership. Goddell should be replaced.

I don't know yoga pants guys, we are going to have to have an asterisk next to this seasons standings. I can't beat the refs.

I don't think Goodell is sitting on his hands here. I believe they were in meetings yesterday even. I believe he's one of the better commissioners of my lifetime. He's a no nonsense guy in a league that requires a lot of baby sitting.

I'm glad that a big mistake happened against a popular team, it will expedite the resolution. I have a feeling that if the refs got the call right, networks like ESPN would starting printing "Well Done Refs" or "These guys aren't that bad" ....when in reality, that was just one call in a trail of bad calls in last nights game and throughout the weekend.

Last night they said that meeting broke down and they were still 'miles apart'. I know Federal mediators are involved now...but the more this keeps up the more ammunition the refs have to stick to their guns. If it really is a matter of just a couple of hundred thousand dollars per team then this is outrageous...

I'm enjoying the revisionist history at this point. As if the regular refs made no mistakes.

Sure they do, but no where near as consistent and catastrophic as the first 3 weeks. We're talking more missed/wrong calls in 3 weeks than I can remember in 10 years total. I think there's maybe 3 historically game changes calls missed or made in the past 10 years. There were 3 in last nights game.

That is kind of the point. Of course they made mistakes and over the last 5 years or so the NFL has done A LOT to limit the reach of those mistakes. All the NFL has said to the Refs over the last couple of years is 'don't **** up the outcome of the game with bad calls'...but that is exactly what is happening now and at a much higher rate. If the NFL was so concerned over the last couple of years of the Refs blowing calls and putting new systems and check in place to limit these calls, then what is going on now is just silly and stupid and makes the NFL look hypocritical and inept...

Yes, the regular refs make plenty of mistakes but usually not blatant ones, with games on the line.

This reminds me, I really like the way the NHL does it, maybe the NFL can learn from them...

Can I get some CN on what the refs are asking for?

I originally thought I heard some huge $$$ being tossed around. If that's the case, simply because teams have "a couple hundred thousand dollars" to toss around, doesn't mean I think refs should be paid that much for working 3 hours a day, 16 days a year.

If the refs wanted any hope of making it out of that stadium alive they did right thing and called it in favor of the home team

Why would the owners want Goodell gone. They have exactly what they want...

The biggest hurdle is the $$ for pensions, current and future, iirc. And the refs aren't caving on that apparently.

http://www.humanevents.com/2012/09/2...sly-suspected/

Union issues, pension issues, salary issues.

I heard on talk radio that the NFL might be trying to just bust the union on this one, play the whole season with the scrub refs and then just go out next year and get the D-1 college refs to come in. All the refs now are D-II or D-III for the most part and it is obvious they just can't keep up...

How many jobs get pensions these days? Yet refs should be entitled to one?

I'm sorry, they ref a sporting event. Simply because the NFL has gobs of money, doesn't mean a damn ref should be set for life.

At least in baseball, hockey, etc. they work a lot more.

*I make this rant with hardly any info on the subject, just massive speculation.

there is a good reason why that isn't reviewable. In instances of interceptions or fumble recoveries, oftentimes there is a "scrum" at the end of the play and the ball can switch possession several times. There has to be some point where you say that one team had possession over another. The best solution is to make that call immediately. Otherwise, the review could last forever and never be totally conclusive. Its a compromise to be sure, but I think its the best option.

They want what they have been getting all along. The owners want to take away pensions and, iirc, add additional "backup" refs. The refs look at this as less job security.

I think it's more a case of what the owners want to take away from the refs, and not what the refs want above and beyond what they got last year.
