Default Idle Noise After Timing Belt Replacement

Hi-

First, I'm new to the forum and have done some searching on this subject, but the posts I found seem, through the thread, get turned into a conversation that digresses away from the OP. Anyway, I have a 2005 Standard 2.5 RS wagon - nice little car.

So with that in mind, I had a local garage (trusted...dealership in this area is notoriously crooked) replace my timing belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, thermostat, and water-pump last week. I've had the car back for about 3 days and I just noticed today, that while the car is idling, I'm hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine somewhere - I don't recall this sound before bringing it in for the work. When I rev up the engine a bit, it goes away, but when the car sits for a few minutes, it comes back.

I've already had it back in since the change for a defective tensioner, which the garage replaced free of charge. Now I plan on calling them first thing Monday morning to bring it in so they can have a look, but in the meantime, any idea what this likely to be?

Thanks for any help!

-S

could be a couple of different things. subaru motors for the most part have a different sound than regular 4 cyls do. you might be just extra sensitive to any noise post the repair. but it could be from maybe an exhaust leak to valve damage. if the car runs fine and isnt idling strange then you might be ok, but id def say have the machanic check it out. better be safe than sorry. great car and best of luck! let us know how it goes

They could have messed up the timing.

Also did your belt break or did you just replace it?

Did you figure out what it was? I'm having the same problem in my 2006 Impreza WRX. The noise goes away at about 2000 rpms. I work at a garage and during lunch tomorrow I'm going to check it out. Im hoping its just a loose belt so I dont have to replace the tensioner.
