Default No Power, Key won't come out of ignition

Hey guys. After finally getting my jdm ej20 in my 04 wrx I get inside it and realize my key is still in the ignition. With my new battery connected I turn it to the on position and no lights come on, I flip on the dome light with no results. So then I try to take the key out and it won't come out. It's been disconnected from power for about 6 months.. Does the ECU have some kind of security lockout? With my parents ford fusion sitting for a few months before they let me swap the engine nothing would happen when turning the key and the dealership had to unlock the ECU, I'm assuming its something similar.

I've read other threads where the ignition had to be replaced because a key wouldn't come out but I don't think this is just 2 coincidental problems. Thoughts? Would a bad ground stop even the dome lights from turning on? I assumed they would work even with the engine removed.

There is no security lockout on an '04. At most if it has the OEM alarm it might prevent the starter from working.
As for the locked key, if the car is a manual the only way that might happen is if it's jammed by the steering lock. If it's this, turning the wheel back and forth should free it.
If it's an automatic there may be a shifter interlock that prevents removing the key if it's not in Park. This might require power to work but there would probably be a mechanical override.

It's auto. I'm only trying to get power to take it out of park so I can load it up and take it to a buddy's to finish everything up. I'll search for a manual override

Check your owners manual the override may be in there.

The manual shows how to get the key out if the ignition if it sticks but I don't think that should be causing the power issue

Start checking for blown fuses. Main fuse in particular.

In any of the auto's I've had experience with there has been a small trim piece near the auto shifter that you can remove to push a button that allows you to shift the lever without power and without your foot on the brake pedal. No idea if Subaru's have it, I've never owned an auto subaru.

Good call! I have to drive auto now, but that saved the day. The no power is a grounding issue, and the key being stuck is in the manual (somehow only attributed to the auto version?) I hope to be on the road by New Years

There are a number of main ground connections that get overlooked a lot of times. Here is a link that may help you. Refer to post 16. It is just one of a few main ground connections on the car.
