So I have been reading everything I can on here abot 2.1 strokers and have a few questions.
is it possible to run this engine with everthing stock but the shortblock? IE... turbo, manifold, injectors, ecm etc. I realise that I won't likely see any performance gains at this point and plan on upgrading later but this car has been down a long time and I need it running. is an access port going to be better than a turbo xs for tuning? What would be the best MT? 07 6 speed.

You will see gains, lower end torque.
The powerband will shift to the left. And A/P will suffice. And 6 spd is always a good thing over a USDM 5spd. |

thanks for the reply. Will I need the AP right off to compensate for the greater displacement or will the stock ecm do for breakin?

I'll jump in and say you'll need either a break in tune using either an AP or an Open Source tune. Your stock ECU map will be expecting 2.0L and not 2.1L and could cause problems.

Use whatever software the tuner recommends. You want to use what the tuner is used to. Generally its an AP, opensource or standalone application. There quite a few vendors that do the 2.1L and give great advice.

The best thing to do is speak to the tuner like everyone said. They've probably done it before and will have a map for break-in etc.

I know of no tuners here in the treasure valley. I asked a few of the subie owner's I have talked to and pretty much got there's not one. I was thinking of getting an AP and a Dom Tune. Just didn't know if I was gonna need it with everything stock but the shortblock.

If you get the ap we can email you basemaps so you can drive your car to here (mps) and get it tuned.

Tune would be required to when ecm goes open loop, that is clear - so some kind of engine management is needed. But can the stock ecm handle closed loop tasks? Idle, cruising, cold start without a problem?

As long as your tuner knows what he/she is doing, you should be fine. and yes the stock ecu can handle closed loop tasks |

thanks guys. I think I am going to go with the AP and a internet breakin tune from MPS. Then drive the car over and have Dom and his team tune it right after I have the break in done. the 600ish mile road trip being the last part of the breakin. just picked up an 18g and plan on ordering injectors next.

Steel,
Did you every run your 2.1L with the stock turbo and injectors or did you just go for a turbo upgrade? I'm at that same point in my build - wanting to keep the stock turbo for a while that is. --Patrick |
