Default 235/40/18 on a 9" Rim

Would you recommend it? How much stretch is that going to be? Too much where it's unsafe?

depends on brand. it will vary from some stretch to pretty square.

A little tall though, 245/35 or 225/40 would probably be better options.

Suggested wheel width for 235-40-18 is 8" to 9.5", so it would no be considered unsafe. As already noted the amount of stretch will depend on the brand of tire / some run wider than others.

If you want the "stretched look" a 225-40-18 is ok. Suggested wheel width is 7.5' to 9".

Are you getting the "suggested wheel width" information from a particular site?

Yes, TireRack.com is one. If you find a tire you like and click on specs it will give you the specs for the tire and the suggested wheel width range.
