Hello I am new here and new to owning a subi. Love the subis and have always wanted to own one but never had the money or option to until now. So I need some help would this be a good year to get or what would be the better year to get? Im gonna do either autocross or track racing and it also needs to be street legal. I will do springs and suspension and stuff but I need to know the year to buy. I need to know owning cost and the cost of problems and what the cost of problems would be. Hope I can get some help on here, I would love to be able to have one of the best looking/best handling cars out there. Thanks in advance!

I think the pre-2000 cars (BG, BK) might be better because STi springs/struts are direct swap (w/tophats) and I think they me be a little lighter than the BE/BH. They are also cheaper.

Alright so say a 98? Im new to subis and have only really worked on the engine/electrical not entirly sure what's going on. So I will look for a 98 or 99 and look it up. I was gonna go big and get tien spor suspension, 1798$ I think. and then new nitto street/track tires and prolly te37s. Then work on the engine. Is there anything that I should do before the tires and wheels? And would those springs and stuff work fine for what I want to do at an entry level?

I kinda agree, the 00-04 models are pigs, having owned two of them. My 98 and 97 both feel a bit more lively, though you do give up a measure of refinement.
Late 99s are going to be the best, and you might even get a hybrid of the EJ25 build. |

Alright ill take a look at those links and see what I find, but ya I thought it might be better for a 98-99 ill look at trying to find a ej25. Im prolly gonna have like 8grand total so I was expecting like 5g for car and then rest on the suspension and tires and wheels and maybe some left over for engine.

Another consideration is that the '97-99 EJ25Ds are prone to head gasket problems.

Indeed, as Patrick Olsen mentions, the EJ25D is more prone to head gasket failure. Having said that, both my Phase II EJ251s had at least one head gasket replacement.
Budget for some repairs and you'll be happy you did. |

Ya that's what im thinking I would put off some of the sway bar purchases and get new head gaskets and some other internals.
