Default 2011 WRX hatch- exhaust drone! AAAH!!

So I just bolted up my shiny new Invidia Q300 to my hatch, and wow- it looks good! Shiny and all BUT...
I have a Borla header, Invidia catless DP, and one hell of a headache! This sucker drones like MAD between 1500 and 2400 RPMs! I'm planning on pulling the Borla header anyway, but will that kill this? Or do I need to go back to a stock downpipe?
The thing sounds SICK and pissed running up and down the RPMs above 2,500, but in normal commuter driving, this thing is killing me! And it's only been on for a few days I was hoping it'd quiet down, but after ~200 miles, no luck. I even put the cargo cover back on, hoping that might eat a dB, but no luck there either! Help! Mark W.

I just installed a Q300 this weekend and had crazy drone too.. im still on the stock downpipe but, what i did was get long exhaust hangers from NAPA (which are longer than KB XLs and stock-like rubber) and replaced all the stock hangers.. VERY little drone..

Of course during cold start and first drive of the morning.. it drones a tad bit.. but when all warmed shes good and purrs very nicely..

To me, it seems since the exhaust got a bit lower from the undercarriage.. theres less vibration resonating throughout the body.. plus on the stock hangers.. it seems the exhaust tips touched the rear bumper a bit.. that or they were insanely close to it..

Not sure how this would work with a catless dp and headers.. but just something to try before losin some of those nice bolt ons you already got on there.. if all else fails.. try switchin to a catted dp.. that should quiet it down a little more

Make sure your downpipe to catback connection is bolted up nice and tight and the gasket is seated well... I have an N1 street so its not exactly the same, but for the first week or so it droned like nothing I've ever heard before, then I checked everything over and I had a massive leak between the downpipe and catback. I got a new gasket (I bought the exhaust used) and it drones very little now. My setup is obviously different so this may not apply, but its just one thing to check especially on a fresh install.

Catted DP would def help with the drone.

I'm sure it's bad with a hatch. I have an Invidia catted down pipe and Q300 on my sedan and it's not too bad but I had to drive about an hour with my rear seats down once and the drone was horrible.

I'm failing to see how hangers fixed drone...???

As for connections, I checked them all when I first started the car, but it'd be easy enough to verify. I'll probably do that after I pull the Borla header. With just the header and DP, I was getting a funky ringing/resonance at ~2K-2,200 that I'm still getting. Weird.

I'm thinking I may swap the Borla for a catted DP, and put the catless for sale towards my 24 Hours of LeMons team Mark W.

Well the longer hangers dropped the exhaust about 1/2 an inch.. which increased the distance between the huge ass resonator in the midpipe and driveshaft heat shield... plus the tips arent so close to the bottom of the bumper

The hatches drone way more than sedans due its obvious shape and empty rear.. soo.. you increase the distance of the exhaust from the undercarriage a little and it makes a huge difference.. trust me =)

I came from a forester fitting wrx/sti exhausts on it.. impreza specific exhausts sit high on foresters so, our solutions were to use the longest hangers NAPA sells (KB XLs werent long enough) eliminating some drone and not burning our bumpers

Madness. If it does a little, and costs a little, it's not a net loss, is it?
Just ordered a catted Invidia DP. Catless DP to be for sale shortly! Mark W.

I am in the same boat as thaduke. I recently put the Q300 on and it is dumb loud between 1500 and 2500. Anyone have any good solutions? I was thinking some audio deading all throughout the trunk.

The v2 Q300 is awful compared to the old one, I was shocked by the drone when I rode in a car with it. Gave the girl in the back seat nausea. The v1 quad tip was pretty quiet for an aftermarket exhaust.

Pulling off the header will not fix that drone. I've got a header/up-pipe, catless downpipe, turboxs catted mid-pipe, turboxs catback. Almost 0 drone, there is a tiny bit of burble at highway speeds, but it is bearly noticeable.

The mufflers on that setup could be the issue.

I'm 99% certain it's the muffler. I've dealt with aftermarket exhausts for over a decade, and drone is almost almost a **** muffler. I'd be willing to bet that's the issue. E-mailing Invidia. A $1,300 exhaust has NO excuse to sound so ****ty.

As predicted, header made 1% change in sound. Car still sounds awful- Mark W.

I had the same problem putting the v2 Q300 on my hatch. I'm running a catted downpipe as well and regardless what I did (sound dampening in the rear, checking all bolts/connections) it was still insanely loud inside. I ended up trading it for a SPT. Couldn't be happier now.

If only you weren't way out in Utah, I'd love to hear it! Nobody around here runs the SPT, that I've found Mark W.

what did you expect with that exhaust set up? You cant play race car and not get the side effects of it.

Hah! If you can find someone to trade with, i'd go for it, honestly. There is absolutely no drone, it's a lot quieter than the q300 and to me I think you get a better suby rumble out of it. The only time it gets a little loud is when you get on it, otherwise it's a pretty ideal setup if you're looking for something that isn't insanely loud but still noticeable.

Dm, if I wanted to play race car, I would. I've run 3" straight pipe off of Rexes before with better results, and no drone. In fact, I'm contemplating swapping the muffler section off of the Q300, and just running no muffler. It could only sound better! Mark W.

100% it's the muffler. They can make all the difference, and with mufflers you get what you pay for. One time I tried a 3" Bosal twin tip exhaust on my wrx (no cats). It looked awesome, but was unbearably loud at low rpm and on the highway.

I sold it after a week and bought a Cobb 3" exhaust (no cats) and the difference was night and day. No droning, no unbearable booming at low speeds... Just a nice and clean sounding, free flowing exhaust

hmm... thaduke you got me thinking... i was contemplating the Q300 or the invidia racing catback. I had one on my 02 rex back in the day and i loved it i might go with the single exit if everyone seems to be having issues i dont remember that ever being annoying but then again i was in my early twenties late teens when i owned it.

Even as a teenager, this would have been horrendous. I haven't heard anything back from Invidia. I think I'm going to start looking for a swap for a better setup, or just sell it and fab up something better- can't get any worse! Mark W.

I have to ask what you ended up doing. My friend has a V1 Q300 and I liked it so I bought a V2 Q300 because I couldn't find a V1 and this things drone from 1k - 2.8K is ridiculous... I can't drive with the windows up its that bad. I have the Invidia Catted DP, and the v2 Q300
