Other than checking your connections, I don't know what else to suggest.

When I hooked everything up, I checked to see that all modes were working in the driveway before driving the car. Everything was fine, even when I was driving it and when I got back home I turned the car off and then turned the key to accessory position and bam, blank white screen. If I touch the mode button it goes to black and then if I touch the screen it goes to white again.

I read where the bypass cause problems sometimes so I unplugged/desoldered all the wire from the bypass other than the ground and it still did the same thing.

Did I get a bad head unit?

Angry Important - Release Of Hvac Cable Sheaths

An EXTREMELY important point to add to the release of HVAC cables from bezels on driver's and passenger's sides of center console: make sure you release BOTH the cables themselves, AND the sheaths that hold them, from anchor points!!! Once this is done, ensure that the cable tips don't touch any wires bundled under the steering wheel.

I did not do either, and:
1. Although cables were detached as instructed, the cable sheath anchors remained connected, and therefore caused the anchor points on the HVAC bezel to crack - I'm hoping a repair with plastic epoxy and duct tape holds;

2. Once I released the sheathing anchor points (after cracking the bezel), one of the cable tips became ensnared in a wire bundle (I luckily found out before stripping the wire insulation).

When you feel resistance, don't just pull relentlessly as instructed in an earlier post on this thread. You WILL break something, of significant cost (>$400 from Subaru parts sites).

I know this is a bit off topic from recent posts so please forgive me for butting in. I have a 2012 Canadian Imprezza with the Clarion PF-3381A HU. Does anyone know where I can find the specs for this thing? I would like to know the Sensitivity, Frequency response and such. Patrick Henry suggests replacing just the speakers with a nice set of Polks would do a good job of improving sound, any thoughts? I am not an audiophile, I just want to improve the system.

This is very helpful for adjusting the sound on the stock stereo, many have done this and it helps things sound a lot better:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2317060

As for the speakers, you could upgrade them and keep the stock HU, but from what I've read the stock HU is woefully underpowered

Did it fit straight in? I thought since the luxury has the 7" screen any other aftermarket Headunit would have to be that size. But I'm keen to get the Sony just so I can install my twin 12 Polk audio subs

What a great thread. I have a '13 impreza sport limited, and this is my first subaru. It is also the first time I have ever been shocked at how bad an audio system can be, but I needed the AWD. I mean, I am no audiophile, but his is an embarrassment. On the highway you have to have it cranked to hear anything, and what you hear is poor.

Anyway, gonna put the Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS into this thing and see if I can live with the stock speakers. This is just a daily driver for me, so the stereo is important, but if I screw a few things up, I'm okay with that. I've done installs before, but long ago.

Also, the stock HU absolutely played hell with my Galaxy Note. After pairing it suddenly started to reboot randomly, etc. Finally unpaired it and did a hard reset. Anyone else notice that?

Definitely a good thread, the pics especially helped with taking the dashboard apart. I swapped out that POS Clarion in my 2012 Impreza Sport Limited 2.0i this last weekend with a custom home built head unit that has AM/FM/HD, MP3 support (of course), handsfree phone, Bluetooth streaming, Android mirroring, speech recognition, and total control of the windows, door locks, and whatever else I want to control via the touchscreen or voice commands.

Instead of buying a spudging tool I used a metal spatula from the kitchen--actually it was the wifes idea :

Then pushed firmly on the plastic tabs at the top of the trim piece and it popped out easily:

Note that I did not have to take the glovebox out or disconnect the ventilation system and speed control linkage on my vehicle. There is a single connector running to the climate control panel.

Here's the LCD touchscreen with the double din adapter, metra dash kit, and DEI HD radio tuner ready to install:

And the PC goes under the passenger seat. It's an Intel DN2800MT with a 6235AN Bluetooth/WiFI/WiDI adapter, 2G of ram, and a 120GB mSata SSD. There are no moving parts on this computer. I made the case out of clear acrylic in my garage. Note that I had block off the vents under the seat and will extend them later with ducting.

The amplifier went under the driver seat, a Rockford Fosgate Punch PBR300X4:

And here's what the unit looks like installed with the dash all buttoned up:

The interface between the PC and car is an Arduino Mega with a custom two-way messaging protocol that I wrote specifically for this purpose. The UI is courtesy of Centrafuse, and I coded the speech recognition engine myself in C# around the Microsoft Speech SDK (not the Centrafuse speech recognition engine). It allows me to send instructions to the Arduino via speech commands so I can control anything in the vehicle I want, or play any song by name, title, or album. I can also mirror my phones display to the touchscreen and control it from there. This is nice for navigation, traffic reporting, and Pandora.

I haven't wire up the Arduino yet because I ran out of time, and the speech recognition is still a work in progress, but so far the project is coming along nicely. It will be a few months before I have everything working exactly the way I want it, but it beats any aftermarket head unit out there and was a lot of fun to build.

Can anyone who has bought a wire harness from SVXdc tell me how long I should wait for a reply to buy a wire harness? I've sent a couple emails over the past couple days and I haven't heard anything. I was hoping I wouldn't have to tap into the factory wires for the SWC.

2-3 days if he is busy. Helping Subaru owners is not his full-time gig, so be patient as long as you can. I have a spare of his harness (new and unused) if you get in a pinch. I can sell it to you and get a new one from him later if need be.

I think on the 5sp this is where the clutch linkage goes, where else can I run a small wire through?

For those that have removed their HU how much room is available behind the stock HU?

I'm thinking of pushing the basic stock clarion HU back hopefully 2 inches and putting a tablet in front. Just trying to see if it's possible without replacing the head unit for simplicity.

I don't believe that you have that much room. I can try to measure but while there might be that much max depth the space is irregular.

Have you found a tablet that will fit perfectly into this space, if the HU is pushed back? If so, which one? Are you planning to permanently install this tablet into the car, or would you make it easily removable? Does your tablet have a cellular connection and an unlimited data plan? If you're planning to use the tablet for playing music (MP3s, Pandora, etc.), how would you get the audio from the tablet to the car's speakers? Do you mind losing steering wheel control of your music?

I don't expect it to fit perfectly, I was thinking of the nexus 7 which is 200 x 114 x 8.65mm. Double DIN is 180x100mm, if I understand from reading through this thread ours is slightly wider than double DIN. I believe this should end up covering up the bezel of the tablet only, as it would sit behind the opening.

I don't have the tablet currently, was going to get an LTE version from Tmobile for their free 200mb monthly, which should cover navigation only. Anything else I'd tether to my verizon phone. If I go with a wireless setup that's removable, I'd get the nexus wireless charger fitting between the volume knobs of the stock HU and magnetically mounting the tablet. Depth on that charger is 12.5mm, so for the charger and nexus 7 it would be 21.15mm, or .833 inches. However I think the volume knobs are deeper than 12.5mm, as well as needing to sit behind instead of in the HU spot, so that's why I was hoping for more room. If I go removable I'd have to widen the HU opening though.

And I'd be streaming through bluetooth to keep steering wheel controls. I know if I replaced the HU I could get much better audio quality so I'm not totally against it, but I'm more concerned with the interface (although I will upgrade the speakers/tweeters).

phenryiv1: thanks for letting me know, sounds like I will have to adjust my plan

Measured the HU today and a nexus 7 fits perfectly on the width, would have to grind away 14mm worth of trim up top. The trend every year seems to be to make the bezel smaller so maybe the 2014 nexus 7 will trim those 14mm for me. Here's to hoping anyway
