Thanks, but I thought base and limited audios are very different as well, so it's not 100% clear to me that Limiteds would have very different harnesses just based on navi option.

I suppose I should locate a service manual and check how the connectors look.

most information can be found HERE and HERE. I crossed referenced it against the service manual when I constructed my harness, and with the exception of missing reverse/parking break lines, it is accurate.
The Metra 70-1761 harness specified needs some trimming off the top for a proper fit, otherwise the excess will stress the connector on the F10.

I'm planning on installing a double-din Pioneer HU myself.

I'm trying to decide between a model that has USB connections on the rear (AVH-P4400BH) vs a model with a USB port on the front (AVH-P3400BH). I would consider the extra expense of the P4400BH if I knew for certain that I could wire the USB port that's in the 2012 Impreza's art rest into the rear of that HU. But Crutchfield says they don't sell an adapter that does that, so I'm not sure what would be involved.

I wanna get the 4400BH because it's like the flagship pretty much without going over $400, but the aux input not being in the front is a just about a killer for me, what would I have to do to make it accessible any time I want to plug my phone into it?

Just run it through the side into the glove box and then when you wanna use it open the glove box and pull it to where ever you wanna use it. Not sure how long the cord is though but I bet you can get an aux extender cord for a few bucks.

good idea. I could probably just drill a hole somewhere in the glove box and hot glue it into place which would make it look official and ****. lol

Or, if we can figure out how to connect the USB jack that's already in the car's armrest, well, that would certainly be the most elegant solution.

I don't think there is a jack in the base model arm rest.

OK. Well, for those of us with USB ports in our arm rests, it would be nice to figure out how to wire it into the rear port of a head unit that offers rear USB connectivity.

You can purchase a pod with USB and Aux jack (p/n H621SAJ220) if factory looks is important to you. The cool thing about this pod is that it uses the standard USB "A" connector. Aux wire harness connector is identical to the one for 2012 Impreza. It will run you about 40 bucks.

If I had that radio I probably wouldn't haven't even bothered changing it. Since you have to worry about that and the steering controls. Plus I mostly did it to get usb jack (listing to the radio now a days is torture). I have the usb wire running from the back of my radio to the glove box and a flash drive plugged into it there. So it's look neat and isn't a pain to change when needed.

Aux jack is an option on base trim (type "A" stereo) but there is no USB support on the HU at all. Curiously support for the steering wheel control is present on the base trim (according to the service manual.)

I'd like to swap the factory HU with a Pioneer double-din HU to get better audio quality and a better user interface when navigating through a large collection of music.

I just finished installing a Pioneer AVIC-X940BT. I bought a wiring harness and Axxess ASWC from SVXdc. Everything went pretty smooth with the install. I just need to program the on/off hook buttons now. I hacked up the Metra adapter as shown in the beginning of this thread, and that worked perfect. I just used a set of diagonal cutters; it cut through the plastic really easy.

As for the install, I shoved the USB/AUX cable into the glove box, and stuck the mic on the steering column for now. I might relocate the mic to the stock location later. I stuck the GPS antenna on top of the radio chassis... it seems to work fine there so far.

The sound quality is a night and day difference. If you want better sound quality in this vehicle, definitely start with replacing the head unit. I may not even change out the speakers now.

I'll try and get a picture posted soon.

Is it true that those of us with factory Bluetooth would be able to use the factory mic (I believe the mic is above the windshield near the map lights, right?)?

I heard factory mic is not compatible with anything except subaru hu, and vice versa.

Anyone know what the base model speaker RMS wattage is? Anyone have a guess if you don't know?

I just ordered a Clarion CX501 CD Receiver for my newly purchased 2011 WRX and am installing tomorrow. It is supposed to have high RMS power input which should push more power to the stock speakers. I will post pictures and let you know how it sounds.

PLEASE PM me when you do. I'll try to look here but it would be orgasmic if you could PM me since I'm buying the 602 which is basically a step up in functionality, but the same hardware.

Clarion lost all my business with the stock radio. If they put out garbage like that i dont want any of their products.

That specific clarion is one ugly radio

It is ugly, but it is basically the "base" OEM radio witout all of the Subaru-specific restrictions and modifications enabled. It also has more features than the OEM unit, by a longshot.

I put the CX609 in place of the OEM unit in my '11 WRX and the difference in sound quality (as in the quality of the sound- not "SQ competition" SQ) is night and day. More power, greater clarity in the tuner EQ, and far more expandability.

$200 was well worth the upgrade, though now I'd go with the 501 if I was buying again (it was not available when I bought mine).
