Default Hitch vs Roof and Thule vs Yakima

Might I ask why you went from the hitch to the roof? I am considering on adding a hitch and going with Thule DoubleTrack vs the roof option. I just ordered the Yakima Frontloader too but can still return it.

ALL: What's better, Yakima Rail Grab or Thules Rapid Aero? Can you put a Frontloader on a Rapid Aero even though they're different brands? Where have people found the best deals? Thanks in advance!

Mostly because I didn't want to mess with putting a hitch on the Subaru. I also like the easy access into the hatch with roof mounts. Since the car's roof is low enough, it just made sense. Plus I needed the roof rack for adding on a ski carrier, kayak carrier, and possibly one of those big boxes.

As for the Frontloader, if the Thule uses square bars, shouldn't be an issue. Not sure on their areo bars and compatibility.

Fantastic! I was actually starting to think the same thing earlier this morning about the hatch being blocked all the time... that would be a pain. I appreciate your feedback. You just sold me on the idea of sticking with the roof. Now the question becomes which one...

Still considering Thule's Aero, but i saw the whispbar railbar (I have the Sport with Rails) but it sounds like it doesn't carry much weight. Maybe 130lbs? How much weight is your rack listed to hold? The railgrab would be using the same polls I think you have which would be another option I suppose.

I think the roof is rated to only 168lbs, or was it 148lbs? The Yakima system would hold more, but the car itself is not made to hold that much. If you have a couple of downhillers up there, I would honestly go with a hitch mount. Lifting a 40lb+ bike up to the roof doesn't seem appealing. I'm on a cyclocross bike (entry level, but still fairly light) and the fiance is on a "hybrid" bike (slightly skinnier tires than a MB, but overall very much like an entry level hardtail), not that light, but not anywhere near a downhill bike.

Not sure on Whisper/Aerobars, I think a few other members may have them.

The manual says the roof can carry up to 150 lbs.

Yakima lists 165lbs in their fit guide for the standard crossbars (48").

Anybody with factory rails and Yakima Railgrabs get a Yakima fairing and willing to post pics? I'd like to get one as large as possible, but I'm thinking that 44" will be too big and just float on the rails. Inno makes a 40" that should fit, anybody tried that?

Default Whispbar

So I'm going with the Yakima Whispbar Rail Grabs for my Sport. Question is what size to get? Yakima's website says you order the S54. I was going to order through REI because they have 20% off this week but there options include S46, S53, and S55. Thoughts?

I got the 38" Yakima fairing from REI this weekend, figuring I could just return it if I didn't like it. Looks pretty good, only about 1" gap on each side between the edge of the fairing and the rails. So far seems to do a good job cutting down the noise (haven't had a chance to test it above 60 mph yet though). I think I'll plastidip it since the huge Yakima logo is kind of obnoxious.

I'll try to remember to post a pic tonight.

Also, I was bored and wanted to see what plastidip would look like:

Think I'll try it for real this weekend.

S54 is the correct size. That's what I have on my car and it fits perfectly.

I have the S54 as well, and it looks tailor made for the ISM Sport. As luck would have it, the SKS cores that are included with the crossbars match my existing 10-pack. I have no use for all of them, but it's a relief I don't have to keep track of different keys.

The Inno fairing works with any type of cross bar, including aero bars. It's not lockable though, which is the main reason I went with the Yakima fairing instead.

will the yakima fairing hook onto the oem aeros though? I can see how the Innos can clamp on. I'm not sure how the Yakimas would, though if the oem aeros are Yakimas, I suppose they could/should...

im just curious, but why put a fairing on an aero bar? I have the oem aero bars and they are not loud on the freeway doing 65mph. at 70? havent driven that fast and at 70 probably wont care about noise or mpg. but i can see why with the round bars. I have the yakima load warrior and that thing will howl so loud without a fairing.

Doubtful, it's designed to attach to the round bars only. I suppose you could attach a round bar to your front aero bar and attach it to that, but that seems a bit silly...

Default Fairing alternantive

I just took some black nylon cord (5/16" maybe) from Home Depot and coiled it around my Thule bar with about 2" spacing and have no more wind noise. It cost me about $5.

I have the OEM Aero bars and bought an Inno fairing. For those who are interested, this does not fit right out of the box because the edges (rail grabs) on the cross bars are too thick. I bought replacement carraige bolts (an inch longer) and nuts (had to go from metric to US) to make it fit...

Also, the medium Inno fairing is the right one for our cars...

What size is this fairing?
