What would make a loud popping noise right near the fireboard when launching hard around 1st to 2nd gear? Sounds like something is hitting only when I take off fast as possible - metal to metal. First thought maybe clutch plate springs popping, but now I think the stock motor and trans mounts are too squishy. Any one have any experience using the TiC bushings (best price vs. quality, me thinks)?

yes, thats the trans flexing. it happened on my sti with hard launches. your shoulda heard the rear diff bang. it would scare the hell out of you.

Yeah, whew - as long as nothing is breaking. I'm gonna have to stabilize this drivetrain soon.

yeah in my 05 wrx the rear diff would always clunk pretty loud during hard shifts.

also nathan, what RPM do you typically launch at?
and do you "slip" the clutch out, or sidestep it completely?

Most of the time, I slip the clutch gradually. RPM is usually around 3000 to 3500. Pop doesn't happen when I launch this way but I also don't feel it goes as fast.

The pop admittedly happens mostly when I release the clutch a little too quickly, or accidentally step off.

The pop happens 100% of the time when I use launch control - hehe. Bad, I know, especially on stock trans but it's hard to resist sometimes.

If I upgrade the engine and tranny mounts, how different are the Group N mounts vs. metal mounts (Megan Racing, Torque Solutions, etc)?

metal mounts transfer a lot of vibration from the drivetrain into the car. rubber mounts absorb more. solid mounts are more performance oriented where the rubber mounts are more daily driver friendly. i personally am going to get the whole setup from torque solutions.
