I would seriously be looking into a well built racing 5spd. With a 6spd you will be shifting a lot and quickly unless you had a built racing 6spd.
what racing gear would even hold that torqe in a 5 speed? it would have to be a dogbox or hybrid dog box if you know of some let me know heck for 4000 id rather have a new trans then used

Here is a good read.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1414422

I have not researched gearing much yet but in short the WRX and STi are geared around half the HP that you are looking at. You will need a much longer gear set. Talking to a professional transmission shop that builds racing transmissions would be a good idea.

My boss has a 900HP drag car that he had his transmission rebuilt to just have 3 gears in it.

Taller gears = stronger, Less shifting = Faster times.

Basically you want a gear box that is very specific to what you will be using your car for.

Amirite?

How does one get to use the hobby shop on base? I'm not active military but I can get on base.

If you can get on base, I assume you or someone has a military id card. You just go to the auto hobby shop and ask for a lift, but get there early if you want the good lifts and you pay by the hour. The tools are free to use.

It's $5 bucks an hour. The hobby shop is behind the car wash which is next to MCSS. If you can get into base you should have access to the auto hobby shop.

The 5 speed case halves will flex at anything over 430-450wtq. Subaru LGT gears are rated to 450tq and PPG gears are rated to about the same. If you are planning on keeping it around there just build a LGT gear box (we sell them for $3300) and get some bushings and bracing (the Moore performance brace is $400)
If you want a 6 speed, the 07 STi has the best gearing ratios of any year. Perfect for drag racing. And you can pick up a used 07 STi tranny for about $3500 (07's are a little more than the 05's because of the gears) but we have proven that the STi tranny can handle over 600wtq+ with launching and racing. We have been running the stock 2011 STi tranny on our Mexico car with no big issues. We are upgrading to a sequential dogbox next week but that is big money and I'm not sure if you wanted to spend that or not. True racing sequential dogbox's like ours and the ones in the Subaru Rally Team USA cars are $35,000+.
And if you do a 6speed swap you'll need new axles, rear diff, and a few other things. But you can do a 07 STi tranny into a Wrx or 04 STi without having to do a 5x114 conversion.
Good luck and let me know if I can answer any other questions.
