Default Co-pilot day with John Paynter

I was lucky enough to get on the list to attend a Dexter's Subaru-sponsored pretend-to-be-the-codriver-day. John Paynter spent the day in 30+C temps taking auction winners, dealership entry winners and other assorted lucky folks for a f%*!#ing high speed blast through the woods. Part of his Subaru-sponsorship obligations I am sure.

The car is a basically stock WRX wagon except for a Link ECU, cat free exhaust (except for the centre cat) with straight pipe, DMS 50 coilovers, some cockpit electronics, roll cage etc.

Anyway, the course was 6 km with 3 short stages through some very smooth, fast sections (deep into 4th gear), some ungodly rough bits with rocks the size of watermelons (he bent a rim and control arm while I was waiting for my turn), and full power turns with the tree branches whipping the side of the car.

Very cool (even though it was damn hot!). Thanks to Subaru, John and his pit crew for a great 7 minutes!

Also, cheers to Rodney. Look forward to seeing the new Superleggeras some time.

cheers,
Tom

Yeah. Someone mentioned that he worked for Subaru. John, Clark and the team were very gracious and patiently answered all questions whether insightful or silly despite working all day in hot temps.

Hey Tom, JC here. How's it going? Are you the guy who drives around in the silver wagon? Just curious because I don't remember seeing a silver wagon at the vent. Anyhow, I posted some pics of the event myself. Check out the link below:

PS - Its nice to see a fellow i-clubber who posts regularly and lives near me. We should go for a spin one of these days. Give me a call. Also, I'd love to see what the Stage 1 Unichip feels like.

JC -

Yeah that's me in the silver wagon. Think I actually saw you this morning on the bridge (gold color stock wheels?). I was at the rally event later in the afternoon...maybe you were there earlier in the day. Actually stumbled across your event thead last night...nice pics.

I should have the updated Unichip harness (v.4) back in a few days. I do miss the extra grunt without it...had to work harder than usual to beat a VR6 Jetta out of the toll lanes into the passing lane this afternoon. At this point, the plan is to sell it and either upgrade or downgrade (not sure).

I'll try and get in touch and we can go for a spin.

Yeah, I got the gold stockers. Traffic was absolutely brutal this morning!!

I was at that rally event all day. I was out on the course keeping ATV's from crossing the road. Got to go for a run at the end of the day as well. Man, can that guy ever drive!! He inspired me and quickly became my hero.

Anyway, I sure would like to get a spin in a Unichipped car. I never bought one for monetary reasons but now it seems for a marginal increase in price you can a much better system with a UTEC. I may get one next year. This winter I'm working on boost control and the up-pipe.

Just think how lucky John Paynter is!! He gets paid by Subaru Canada to race that damn thing and if he smashes it up... oh well, Subaru will just foot the bill. All he has to do is help fix it. Man, I'd pay money to have his job. In fact, many do.
