I hated that. Have 10hrs work of work to get done in an 8hr day that gets turned into 3-4hrs cause we keep having to evacuate. (I work with stuff that blows up, lightning is bad!)

Beginning to realize that many Elise owners are smug asses.

They seem to be fine with having someone do everything for them for some reason.
"Oh, I got my oil changed and tires rotated, it only cost $600 at xyz dealer, I got such a good deal and they even gave me Frapalattachino and cookies, hmm, my life is so good."

You get a blue collar guy like me on their webboard and they get angry when I mention some work I did. I guess as an Elise owner I shouldn't get my hands dirty?? It's not like it's a quarter million dollar supercar!

I made a "custom" cat delete pipe using the stock pipe. Cut it open, gutted the cat, welded it back together. Cost me $8 for some header paint vs $300-400 for a bought pipe. Apparently they feel the bought pipe is somehow better.

That thing has an old camry engine right? Lotus have always been a dream car of mine. I drove an MR2 for three years, an elise seemed like it would be the ultimate version. The evora looks amazing and the espirit will probably always be one of my favorite cars. That's one thing I miss about my MR2 was the flip up headlights, I wish they still made them.

WGMG:
Subaru's poor emissions design.

The WRX threw a P2443 and P1410 code right before I'm about to sell it... and being the nice guy that I am, I'm fixing it for the next owner instead of deleting the codes.

Took it to AA Subaru, so far I'm in it for $324 for 3 hours of diagnostics and inspections. Looks like I'll have to replace both valves at $312 each plus the 4-6 hours labor at $108 per hour.

So because Subaru wanted to lower the emissions on their turbo charged cars, I get to replace 2 (known) faulty valves at a cost of $1300-1800. Thanks Subaru.

On the plus side, they did say that it was one of the cleanest WRX's they've seen.

The tumble valves? No way that is 4-6 hours labor at shop rates. The first set I did took me about that long and I had to deal with all sorts of ass backward Russian "fixes" too.

To be fair, I know nothing about cars. All I know is they have to remove the intake manifold: or so I've read from other people.

AA is still running their diagnostics to make sure its not the relay, or clogged. I knew about the P2443 code, but not the P1410. So essentially I have one stuck open (passengers side) and one stuck closed (drivers side). From everything I've read online, and talking to one of the techs there at AA last month, its about 3 hours labor just to get to the valves, not to mention each valve is $312ish. If I knew my way around a motor, I would do this myself.

I did read most of this information from here though...

If the car has the green brackets of death still attached and you do everything by the book of r&r on this fix, 4-6 is rather generous.

To be fair there is a way around pulling the manifold to put in just the motors, but book pays to remove the intake manifold. At this point doing a TGV delete would actually save a headache down the road and with the tuners that are here in town would be the better route to go. Just my $.02

$108 an hour shop rate wow

Damn that sucks big time. They really should use those more as intended. Seems most states have them easily accessible to update with info. Instead of like this past winter on the Glenn "Winter driving conditions"... um yeah, no **** sherlock, tell me something I don't know.

****ty they are smug, although I guess at a certain level of car the majority of owners wind up being "car enthusiasts" vs "car guys". One has all work done by someone else yet appreciates the car and its cmplements, the other actually gets their hands dirty.

FWIW, the B5 guys dynod a homemade cat delete vs a bought one and found nearly identical numbers, actually I think the home made had better numbers.

If I were keeping the car, I would delete the code, or go ahead with the TGV delete if I were to crack into it.

I just heard back from AA Subaru. They couldn't get the valves to move, so I authorized them to replace both at 3 hours shop time, and $780 ($390 ea) for the valves + gaskets. They took 1 1/2 hours to diagnose, so my $324 is down to $162. I'm still looking at a total of $1290 for total replacement... there goes my profit margin for the car.

Should have maybe looked at other shops in the area, just saying. P3 is $65 an hour and there's a few more that are less than the $108 :/. I've never delt with AA personally, just heard a few things and they seem to be more geared to the N/A subarus.

Makes no sense based on codes. If TGV (both) were stuck you would be making a lot more codes. I'm going to chalk it up to the service writer not communicating exactly whats going on or some misunderstanding by you.

The valves you need (only one I feel) are 243.02 each from Subarugenuineparts.com

I know nothing of cars, I'm fine with that. I pay people to change my oil . And I have a pretty tight time restraint with this repair. I have somebody coming down from Fairbanks this weekend to look at the car (and perhaps drive it away). They're determined enough that they already have the loan set up.

With that said, my options were pretty much AA, or Continental. And to put it mildly, I'd rather never deal with Conti again. The gal at AA actually suggested (without directly doing so) to just have the codes deleted. That is until I explained I was selling the car and my bloody morals won't let me sell a broken vehicle without declaring it.

Forgot about those brackets, that is one thing I got rid of on the car I had. Was told they are some kind of crash support?

I would have just erased the codes and if they came back after a day or two then worry about it. Have had PLENTY of codes pop up on vehicles that were just weird ECM glitches and nothing more.

This was the second time they came up. First time I cleared it, and after a week just one came up. I then put the car in storage for a month then picked it up and drove it for 2 days before dropping it off at AA, and apparently both were back at that point.

Bikers on the road when there's a sidewalk 10ft away...
Probably millions $$$ in sidewalks and they choose to bike within inches of cars. Makes no since. Maybe there's something I'm not getting!
