these are my concerns, and why a real diff is the greatest of them.

edit: the benzo trans is pretty damned good.
About 1.5 of your hypothetical situations exist in real life (picking up your parents and all others combined give a *if the all the moons and planets aligned, then it MIGHT happen* situation), the rest are irrelevant because they don't happen. You need to readjust them.

a) does it shift slower than a bag of dicks?
b) will the transmission blow up?
c) will the transmission be expensive to replace/repair?
d) will all electronics in the car fail?

That's yes, yes, yes, and yes, 100% without fail.

cmon, those are very relevant concerns, all which i've been irritated at one or more of my cars in recent memory for failing at.
and:

a) no, it's faster than most human shifts. it's similar to 1st gen SMG shift speed. and has a large wet multiplate clutch in the tq converter which is locked at almost all times. it's closer to a lenco than a traditional auto.
b) no, same transmission attached to more powerful engines in heavier installations
c) possibly, unsure of that, parts is parts, and benzo parts are about the same price as subaru parts, rebuilding auto trans is generally just clutches, seals and the occasional band if still used.
d) i'm not sure the electronics will fail. benz does specify better bosch stuff than bmw and audi. but it's till bosch, so suspect to start with.
and that's my concern#2. right behind it having a proper differential.

i'm still figuring out if i want one, but it's captivated my interest to say the least.

edit: WRT strength:
"The Mercedes-Benz 5G-TRONIC (also called 722.6) is an electronically shifted 5-speed overdrive automatic transmission. It is in the process of being replaced by the Mercedes Benz 7G-Tronic Transmission which was introduced in 2003. However, all V12-powered cars such as the S600 and S65 AMG still retain the 5G-Tronic, which has a torque capacity of 796 lb-ft, as the newer 7G-Tronic is limited to 542 lb-ft, not enough to handle the torque from the V12 engine.[1] "

maybe you're so used to hondas and rotary dreaming you need to remember what real torque is.

just drop one planetary out.

He's going to have to beat on it pretty hard. In fifteen years of being around MB's on a daily basis I know of only one trains failure . A 270,000 mile 1998 M class. There is a MB service writer amongst us. Maybe he can offer some insight ?

That's what we all wish for.

Instead, it's taking up all the indoor workspace, and nothing gets done because of it.

Pretty much. Only about half run. I guess the other half are for parts. Good thing is he keeps them behind his house so it is not an eye sore.

I had a Shelby Daytona, fun little car. High demand for them for some reason. Bought it for $1000, sold for $1900 a year later

Nope, and I'd be completely content with cleared and stealthed at this point. Just no time and don't want to screw it up.

RE wheels/tires: tarmac 2's in silver, 18x7.5, +48, 5x100, some rash, no bends with 225/40 kumho le sport tires @ 5-6/32nds, all even wear.. $425 picked up.

Hey guys: I sold my STi a few weeks back and I have some parts left over. I have a family member who is coming to visit at the end of this month and they are willing to take this stuff back to PA if anyone has interest since the Subaru crowd here is a joke. PM me for more info and pictures.

- 18x9.5 5Zigen FNO1R-C Wheels. 5x114. Bronze. They have a set of 285/30/18 Hoosier A6's mounted on them. The tires have probably 20-30 runs left in them. The wheels are flawless. - $1300

- Sparco Corsa seat. Blue. I have the side mount and GD mounting bracket for it that I can include. $400

- 17x9 Rota D-Force wheels. Dual Drilled. Matte Black. 245/45/17 Star Specs mounted. Tires have life left but 2 of them have some severe wear on the inside edge. $800

- Schroth Quick Fit Harness. Blue in color. Only used a handful of time and is in perfect condition. (I can ship this) - $200
