Default I might be doing my first rebuild ever and I have a question

I've got a late G short block I'll be buying. Now it needs new bearings.

I've been told that I will have to get a crank grind and oversized bearings. Is a grind actually required or is that only if the crank got chewed up when the bearings let go?

there is only a tiny amount of hardened surface on the crank. grinding it will render the crank useless.

you can find more info in the built section

Yes you need to have the crank ground undersized. The chances of it surving spun bearings undamaged is slim.

I would just grab a used crank. It's the same as the non-turbo 1.8/2.0/2.2 You have those over there right? They are dime a dozen here and you can get one dirt cheap.

The block fell through anyway so I won't be doing it anytime soon. Yeah they are pretty much all over the place and I did think about dropping a 2nd hand crank in I just wanted to know if the grind was REALLY needed.

A grind is only needed when the journals are damaged due to a spun bearing. If the journals are OK just use some new (ACL) bearings and your crank. Don't bother grinding get a good used crank as said above.
