I am a mutual friend of Wills. I live in New Jersey and work for SOA, Inc. on the tech helpline. I can tell you he was one of the best techs out there. I just found out today from one of Wills best friends. I am so sorry. I never met Will but he and I had a connection I can't explain. He used to tell me if I ever made it down to Florida we had to meet up and talk Subies. I want to send my best to you and your family and to let you know he will always be in my thoughts. Such a tragedy and very heart breaking.

I've written about 10 different posts, and deleted them all. I find it hard to articulate myself with such conflicting and unfamiliar emotions. At its essence, I am deeply humbled by the thought that Will is gone.

To all - please accept my gratitude and heartfelt thanks for contributing here (and on Facebook). It has been relieving to share the community's grief, sadness, and pain of losing Will... and comforting to share in the celebration of his remembrance.

Rest in peace, my friend.

A celebration of life for our son, brother and friend Will Maham will be held Saturday March 10 between 2-4pm
http://www.forbisanddick.com/obituar...ls.php?id=2416

It's a "gathering" to remember the life of our Son and your Friend, not a formal service.

They've also stated there's plenty of hotels and motels in the area, and that they definitely recommend getting one if you're coming from far away. They'd love to get as many people there as possible, so please, don't feel like you're not welcome!

Also, if you have anything of Will that you'd like to bring to the service, they'd love to have that. As of now, they're far too distraught to open any of the boxes he's given them in the past couple years.

The weird thing is facebook suggested I add Porter as a friend last Tuesday. I didn't think anything of it, and assumed that if he wanted to be friends with me he could add me just as well (as we all sometimes do). Then I got the news. It was an odd coincidence.

I know I said we'd not talked in recent years, which is true, but sometimes I wondered what he was up to. ScoobySouth told me once in the last few years that Will was down at SOJAX with him as a mechanic and seemed to be pretty happy. That was positive news in my mind to know that his life was going the way he wanted it to.

In 2005 we were very close. He codrove with me in my RS a few times. He was even my instructor at the CCR autox school in 2005. We went to Nationals with Steven, John, and Jane. He was like my brother. Then we lost touch shortly after that year, he met Ashley, and off he went to Florida. I have always wished him nothing but the best.

This past week has been tough for me knowing how much time we spent around each other (no, we didn't date). It makes you cherish those around you more - and has made me reconnect with some people I'd lost touch with. The thing that breaks my heart the most, is that his beautiful daughter will never get to have those late night conversations over a beer with her dad when she grows up.

I spent the last few hours combing thru some old pics on my laptop (3 laptops ago) and my external hd. This isn't much but it's a few things that can make you smile. Most of it's from 2005. I also have a copy of his article he scanned and sent to me that was in SubieSport, and two videos of him driving my car from Maggie Valley (can't remember if it was subaru challenge weekend event or not) but they won't work in picasa. Maybe I will try youtube and filebox later. I know for sure the pic of the STi with Will, Justin, and Stephen was taken after competition at the Subaru Challenge.

I am sorry to hear about this. I met will a couple of times when I lived in Asheville. I was part of WNC rides and when we used to go to Auto x's he was always there with either the RX or the RS. He was a really good guy and always willing to help people. RIP Will.

I met Will at the Maggie Valley Subaru Challenge back in 05' when Rankins hounded the absolute piss out of me to try autocross ... and then started three years of weekends consumed with it. Will was a regular, and a wealth of knowledge like everyone said, he truly was one of kind and someone that I, along with most of us, would have done anything to help. He was the type of person that made autocrossing and the Subaru community what it is known for. He always had a smile on his face and eager to help anyone and everyone.

You will be missed Will, God bless my friend

Just an update. We're still working out the logistics of the trust fund for Charlotte. It's not as easy as we thought. We really want to ensure that all of the t's are crossed and i's dotted.

As soon as we have somewhere to put that money, the link will be posted.

thanks

I'm not around here hardly at all anymore, but I heard the news and wanted to say a few words.

I only met Will once in person, in 2004, at the Dragon. Before the RS, before the RX even... he was driving a GL-10 Turbo wagon, light blue, if memory serves me correctly, and obscenely lowered.

As I was with the XT crowd, and he was with the NASIOC crowd (why the two were so socially segregated, I never understood), I didn't interact with him much.

But I still remember to this day the huge smile and glowing genuine enthusiasm he had for the brief time I talked to him, and I always admired him for that.

My condolences to all his loved ones and all of you who were close to him. The entire Subaru community has lost one of its finest.

Stickers remembering Will are finally done! Clay and I got them Fri evening and the first one was given out at the ESX/BRZ meet at SoJax. They came out great

Donations are being taken for them. 100% of the money raised will be going into a trust fund for Will's daughter for college. I will be making a seperate thread in the Southeast region but i just wanted to post up in here to tell every one they are ready and look awesome!

i hadnt spoken to will since i got out of the suby game... i come back to see this. Not sure what the other thread was since I didnt see but I do know this...

Will was that guy that new subaru's like the back of his hand... he told me he could have a clutch done in under 4 hours and I was definitely surprised. He was very talented and knowledgeable.

Where ever he is... we will miss him.

Good Will Story

2006 - and I (infantsam then - not wrxbrakes) buy a used motor so that Ryan (oldskoolwrx) can install it in a 2005 STi for a local guy at our new 'shop'

We muddle through the install - and go to opensource flash it - and viola - ECU freezes/fails. WTF?

We got nothing now - and the customer is a calling...

So Ryan contacts Will -

Will drives down to my house (Cary, NC) from REALLY REALLY far and plugs in - 5 seconds later "No good - yer screwed'

Now mind you he showed up in a pretty badass swapped RS - white - that I'm sure some of you on here recall or know whose it was. So I didn't really care about the $400+ ECU I was now out of on a motor swap - I wanted the dang RS - or a test drive - Anything!.

So since we could do no work - and he drove pretty far - and he showed up in a much cooler car than any of us had - well then out came the BBQ and he and I and my wife/son had an impromptu but awesome steak dinner and a few of those 'discussions' that many of you fondly recall.

I recall it being a beautiful NC afternoon with a nice warm sunset talking cars over that POS STi and his swapped RS followed by a great meal. Mind you - I was left with Will and my wife and then 6 yr old son. He ate well that night.

My 8 hours and WJM memories are great. Condolences and best wishes to those that grieve.

I'm only old by age - but old days w/ the old crowd like the member #'s we see replying here. It's a social network DISGUISED as a car network.

I only read this yesterday and have been thinking about it since... What a blow.

I met will once, I think it was in 2003, in Germany while he was visiting a (girl)friend there. We went go-karting in Duisburg I think. It was great to meet him and talk about our shared passion in the older EA82 generation Subaru's. I then moved on when I got a Legacy and lost touch. Until a few years ago. We had some email contact and I sent him some EUDM parts catalogue CDs. Will was always trying to expand his knowledge base about Subaru, in his bid to be able to help others.

My (somewhat) late condolences to his family and loved ones. Will, rest in peace, you will be missed.

I think I first started talking to Will back in 2002 when I first started working for CCR and posting on USMB. We both had RXs, so we would chat on AOL about our cars. We became close and remained good online friends for years, though we never got the opportunity to meet.

I haven't been very active in the online Subaru community for a long time, so it took a long time for the news to reach me. I had left numerous messages on his voicemail, sent emails, and wondered why his Facebook account had disappeared. The last time we talked was 2/27...I tried calling him just last week and reached the voicemail of a stranger, so I finally asked someone if they had heard from him and that person is the one who finally told me. I can't believe it took me so long to find out...

I could talk a lot about what a great guy he was and how important he was in the Subaru community, but everyone in this thread already knows that. I'm sorry for bumping this, the news just hit me hard and reading this thread cheered me up a little.

You will be missed, Will.
