Default replacing my power steering/alternator belt

Hey guys, I went and picked up a new belt today for my power steering pump and alternator (due to the old one breaking last night) as I'm trying to this thing on and it's just a truly Hurculean effort. I have the alternator dropped as far as it will go, and there still just isn't quite enough slack in the belt for me to fit it over the crank pulley, no matter how hard I pull. Any suggestions?

Wrap it around the crank and the power steering. Do the alternator last.

Also don't overtighten the belts or you will kill your bearings.

Did you get the new belt at a dealer or a parts store? If you got them at a store perhaps they gave you the wrong size. Compare the old and new belts, the old one may have stretched a bit but they should be fairly close, if the new one is significantly smaller it's probably wrong. It should not be that difficult to install.

I'm pretty sure it is the correct belt, as I looked up the Subaru factory part number (809218370), and it appears to be used in a number of Subaru's motors, including my own, from the site I saw. I have tried everything but that thing just does not want to go on, and I realize it shouldn't be a tough install at all. Just can't quite put my finger on what the deal is.

This was from a Subaru dealership, by the way.

Well after calling a few dealerships, methinks I may have the wrong part, and what I need is 809218270, which is supposedly slightly larger.

Just for future reference of anybody with an '02-'03 WRX, the correct part number for the power steering/alternator drive belt is 809218270.

most often they give you a 345k5 belt, when it should be a 350k5. The difference is night and day between how much effort you have to use to get it on.

A/C belt:
Make sure you loosen the nut on the idler pulley first(bottom right pulley). This will allow the idler pulley to move when the adjuster screw is turned. Otherwise the plastic assembly will break under the tension. I believe the adjuster screw is reverse-threaded as well. Watch the direction the idler pulley moves along the screw as you remove/install.

Power steering and alternator belt:
Same rules for the alternator. Be sure to loosen up the housing bolts before you start cranking on the adjustment bolt, or things will break.

Anyone know a good way to achieve the specified tension on the belts? I think I may be overstressing my compressor pulley bearings.

Chances are that I may get flamed for posting here, and reviving this dead old thread but Ive run into a bit of an issue getting my belts to fit my impreza properly. The old belt and new belt both came from subaru, they are both the exact same part number 809218270, but for some reason the new belt refuses to fit my car properly, and this is with the alt adjusted all the way down. Has the belt size gone down for the 02 Impreza? Im hoping to save some $$ by doing this myself but I just cant figure it out....

I had the same issue. The belt the parts guy sold me at Subaru was just a little to small. Took it back and they gave me a different belt....that fit fine. This was a few years back and i do not remember the exact details about the part number. Call the dealership, they will work it out for you.

Also just to help yourself out for the alternator belt use a sharpie to make a tick mark off to the side, to note where the tension was before on the previous belt. I'm not to sure about your a/c belt because I have the self-adjusting v-belt on mine
