That's my main concern, current roommate pays for internet but got the crappiest provider ever, I am not going to get my own internet when his is free to me and works OK for what I use it for currently. So might just go extra inning

Then in that case, maybe Extra Innings is your best option.

Trying to figure a few things about the roto game ...

1. How is a pitcher who has an innings limit (ie Strasberg this year, Jordan Zimmerman last year) be dealt with. He will rack up some incredible stats, but will likely be done by late August. If the whole year is considered, do you just drop him when the time comes, but retain the points he helped accumulate?

2. How are the line ups set? Do you set it at the beginning of the week and leave it or are you shuffling players in and out everyday based on schedule?

3. Is the right strategy (I guess this is subjective) to try and dominate a few categories to maximize points in those or to have a more balanced approach to try and do ok in all categories but not necessarily lead any of them?

4. Injuries? Earlier we talked about a guy like Hamilton being less valuable in roto because he tends to get hurt every year. Can't you just bench him during the injury and play him when healthy (much like in head to head) or am I missing something?

Thanks for the real (and inevitable sarcastic) answers.

1. It's the stats that count. If Strasburg is shut down in August, you drop him and roster another arm. Naturally, this is subject to the league innings limit.
2. This is a daily league. You change your roster every day.
3. Typically, you want to score well in each category. Generally, finishing in the top 3 or 4 of each category puts you in contention to win the league. Of course, if you win one category and finish fifth in another... that averages out well. We have ten categories, so in a ten manager league there are 100 maximum points. The winner ranges between 75 and 85 points in a league where all managers are playing to win.
4. You get 162 starts for each position. If you draft Hamilton at OF1 or OF2 and he only starts 125 games (and you play him for each of his starts), you'll be stuck in finding 37 extra playing days from another outfielder. That may mean picking up someone, contingent on what you have on your bench (from the draft). There is one DL spot, so you can use that for Hamilton (if he hits DL)... and pick up another OF to fill those vacated games. A lot of times, you will see someone shut down for a few games and not hit the DL. If so, you have to jockey your bench players to fill gaps.

In general, you want to maximize your innings pitched (1400 for the season) and your available position player starts (162 for the season). The game is scored on stats earned (by playing the player), yet by ranking you on those stats -- if you have more HR's than any other player during the season... you get 10 points (in a ten manager league) or 12 points (in a twelve manager league).

That being said... we have nine managers. Anyone else want to join?

Any interest in finalizing the teams and having me randomly set the draft order before the actual draft date? This would give us the opportunity to project available players contingent on draft spot.

I'd like to get at least one more manager before doing this, though. Anyone interested in being our tenth?

At this point, Kevin, as long as the person is reliable and won't bail mid-year... I am fine with it.

You can set your lineups days in advance, if necessary.

who the hell likes weekly setup leagues, what happens if a pitcher gets injured, or a player gets moved, missing stats because of things out of your control FTL

Being able to tinker daily is kinda what is appealing to me instead of the weekly football lineup

So... now that we have a 10th, want me to close the league to new managers and get the roster order set (in advance of the draft)? Or... do you guys want to wait until draft day for the order to be set?

I'd be happy if you wanted to randomize the draft order early. That way, we can start plotting draft-day strategies.

Also, I'm probably not down for a draft-day get-together, since I probably have to be in court on Monday morning. It's a work thing.

No worries... I'll let everyone else chime in, regarding setting the draft early.

I'm fine with setting it early.

I skimmed through the thread, but are we sticking with 5x5 rules or going 6x6?

I get around the MLB.tv blackouts every time with a VPN - just pick up a $3/mo one somewhere in a market that you give no effs about, like Seattle.

International IP addresses do not get any blackouts either, so you can get one in Canada and it would probably work fine.

The settings are default for Yahoo! If you want to change things up, propose on the message board there or on here. It may be easier to keep track if we just commit to one place to discuss pre-draft items.

I will admit that I have qualms against adding categories that are duplicative of another category. For example, K/9 or OPS. If we are going to add either one of those, or a similar category, I'd prefer to ditch K's or AVG. I'm only one man though, so if we get 2/3 approval (minus abstentions)... I'll go along with it.
