Default Dash cam guys.... Help me out

I am looking for an affordable dash cam for protection against other jerks on the road. I need something affordable with loop recording, that will turn on when I get in the car. I can wire so installation shouldn't be problematic.

This one looks like a great candidate

What do you guys think? I see some really good set ups out there but they run 200$+ and my budget is around 100$ for this.

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/h-264-7...-2-5-lcd-54137

Thanks!
-Dave

I think that's a pretty good camera. I'm guessing you've had quite a few problems with other drivers?

CMOS image sensor used in low end dash cams generally performs poorly under low light condition. See if a unit using CCD image sensor is available.

I have a dash cam installed in the front and rear of my car, and it has saved me 2 tickets.. One was a $165, and the other was a felony for failure to stop at the command of a law enforcement officer..

On the felonious one I was doin about 120 on the freeway, and I passed a cop.. He started coming after me, but never turned his lights on. Then he got my plate and backed off. Cops showed up at my house, and detained me... I got out that night, and when I got home I pulled the tape, and it proved that the cop never "light me up"
I showed it to the judge, and he dismissed the case, and apologized to me for the cops arresting me without cause.
Cameras installed in your car is such an asset for protecting yourself. It eliminates the hearsay and all arguing. Had I not had the one, I would have a felony on my record and a $3000 fine.
I paid about $300 each for mine, I can pull the video off with a flash drive, and i can type a date and time into the program it came with, and it automatically pulls up the footage. It shows the date and time stamp in the top left corner of the screen in military time as well.
My dash camera is installed very similar to how the popo has there's, and same with the rear camera. Ya just have to make sure your windows clean or you will get blurry blur on there. Lol

I use my Droid 2 with the Motorola/Verizon windshield mount/charger. Works perfectly well, even at night. I record every trip and then just delete them at the end of the week. With the 8GB microSD card, I can record 2.5 hours at DVD quality.

The only problem is the phone tends to over heat if I charge it while recording, but only if I'm driving over 45 minutes. On longer trips, I can simply unhook the charger and keep going, and hook the charger back up when the phone's battery gets low. So, it's perfect for my daily commute (20-30 mins), but isn't ideal for long road trips.

I like it because I always have my phone on me, and I just take it inside with me when I'm done driving, so I'm not carrying around extra equipment. I was only out the additional $20 for the mount, which I found on Amazon.

most dash cams supports rotating data files. some lower end units will go "blank" while rotating files and ended up with (many seconds of) gap between recordings.

Enough to justify a camera. that's for sure.

I recently had someone cut me off, 100% his fault. Insurance company is saying that is is a percentage his fault, and a percentage of it is my fault. Wtf? I want a dash cam. I don't trust people...

very good cameras, but I need one for a very specific, common task. I think I can find a camera for less money because I can afford to give up a few qualities like picture quality, durability, etc...

This guy looks like a winner, price is right, almost 4 stars from a bunch of reviews. I need it to start automatically, and loop record. If it does those two I am totally ordering one ASAP. I could tuck it away on the top passenger side of my windshield.

I was just about to pull this off in my own ride, I want to add remote access from my phone like I have on my house. All the cameras I have looked at are 12v dc so it's all gravy cakes inside a vehicle. Just need to figure out the mobile hot spot part...

It says it has loop recording, and turns on when it sees motion. I think this is a winner

I'll wait to see what you guys think of it. I think it will work out just fine.

Finally ordered my dash cam. I will let everyone know how it works when it comes in !

-Dave

P.S. with my driving history I think no one should be without a dash cam with the way drivers are on the road.

My dad bought two of those you've linked to in the original post. They're quite good in terms of video quality, I was actually really impressed.

They're slightly counter-intuitive to use but once you've figured it out it's not a problem. I couldn't sort out how to get it into loop recording mode, but I only spent about 30 seconds playing with it so I probably just missed the menu item. My dad paid $150 for the first one at a local car audio shop, then found a second one online for $55, exactly the same model.

****in impressed. 39$ shipped to my doorstep and I can read license plates and cool stuff like that. This is EXACTLY what I wanted and it's right in my budget. For literally UNDER 40$ everyone should have one of these!!!
Heres a video I took with it.

I am going to splice the wires down the a pillar and into the fuse box to come on when I turn the key. The camera turns itself on, and off 1 minute after I shut the car off. This thing is awesome. The only downside is the quality but it works fine for me, this is just what i wanted

Pix of splicing to come later, I'll make it a DIY

-Dave

Edit: I guess it's a little over 40$ because you have to put a card in it, who doesn;t have 3 or 4 of them laying around their house anyways? I put a 2 gb in it. I will report later on how the loop recording works out.

Camera is working perfectly, auto record is fine. Night time recording is mediocre unless the headlights are on (A.K.A. don't rely on the IR lights on this for anything because they are terrible)

Very happy with this camera, solid 8 out of 10 for what I'm using it for. Recommend it.

Depending on the quality, IR lights are only good up to a couple dozen feet or so, nothing more. This is the case even with home security cameras. You have to typically buy a dedicated Ir flood lamp that washes the area for a camera. This is how i would install commercial security systems on bldg's in socal.
