I got this one
Amazon.com: 2.5-inch HD Car LED IR Vehicle DVR Road Dash Video Camera Recorder Traffic Dashboard Camcorder - LCD 270 degrees whirl: Car ElectronicsAmazon.com: 2.5-inch HD Car LED IR Vehicle DVR Road Dash Video Camera Recorder Traffic Dashboard Camcorder - LCD 270 degrees whirl: Car Electronics

I finally hard wired it into the car. I was going to make a DIY but it's so HOT outside! Especially baking in my car! I'm not going to idle my car with my loud exhaust to run the AC either that would piss the neighborhood off

Anyways, here's what I did. I ran the wire into the ceiling material (Just tucked it up and it stayed) Popped off the drivers side A pillar (It just pulls right off, slide your fingers behind it and pull) and ran it down the weather stripping to the lower half of the dash assembly by the steering wheel. Take off the push-pop plastic rivet pin type thing on the drivers side dash of the car, then take the fuse bog drawer out and pull. The three clips will pop out and you can run the wire right behind the steering wheel. If anyone is genuinely interested I'll make a 30 second video showing you how to do all this.

I saw a ton of videos where the cameras came flying off the windshield so I also put some gasket sealer on the suction cup and sealed it to the windshield

As for wiring it into the car, I used the wires going to the cigarette outlet. The shifter boot pops right out and it's very easy to access. You can't just splice the wires together as the little "box" that plugs into the outlet has converters in it, this camera specifically takes 12v~24v DC and converts it to 5.5v DC.

You should have a soldering iron, or a friend who knows how to use one for the next step.

Take the soldering iron and melt the solder connecting the "Spring" and the wire lead to the circuit board inside the converter. On these little guys the spring is the positive. Throw them away. Now get some thin braided wire (Try to use common sense when picking size) and pre-tin the wire with some solder. Then stick it through the cleaned circuit board and toss a dot of solder on it to fix it to the board. Nip off any extra wire that isn't neatly in the joint with some small dikes.

These little circuit boards are everywhere, most cell phone car chargers are the same so don't worry, if you screw up you can just use another and solder the cables for the camera wire to the cell phone circuit board.

Also, they don'y give you much wire to splice into on the factory harness, so I used these bangin' little "Splice" connectors.

If anyone has ANY questions just let me know. Literally 5 days ago my mom's fiance was in a hit and run. He thought it was funny that I got this camera in my car, now I am installing one in his car next week lol. He wouldn't have paid a dime if he had a cam himself, he got a flat tire and messed up his bumper. He was unable to chase the guy that ran a red light.

Cool Dash Cam Success

I had to bring my STI in for a new set of shoes today. As I parked and walked in I noticed everyone looking at me, one guy shouted nice car, said thanks, and went on with my day as I waited.

I came back and the kid who drove it up had this look of sheer excitement on his face. Red flags raised, I went home and checked the video. At first it catches audio of taking the car for a drive to turn the TPMS light off, which then becomes test drive and then burn outs. After a slow cruise around the corner, the driver looks both ways and all hell broke loose. I noted 80 mph top speed through a neighborhood and RPMs that were somewhere around the rev limiter (based on the tach alarm).

Went back with my laptop, showed the video and the guy was immediately fired. Damage to car = none, Idiot = fired. win win.

I'd be furious. Good thing you realize you drive your car like this also and it's not a big deal. I like that

Glad to hear he got canned for not respecting other peoples **** they they worked hard for.

Because I am not good at video editing I didn't bother with screen capturing the UI. When you back it up to an AVI you lose audio and don't have the speed, you'll have to just take my word on it. I have a video of the interior as well which has the audio but I wasn't going to upload that.

I have been testing my smart phone as a dash cam. The description of the videos on the youtube page explains a bit more. of my set up.
So far I think my tests have good results. I think my mount is not stable enough though.

I have a FineVu CR500HD and I quite like it. Bought mounts for both Subies and I just move the camera between cars. I would like to get another one to face rearward as well in the future.

*Make sure you turn up the Video Quality to 1080P otherwise you don't get to see the quality as good*

Daytime Example

Night Time Example

I think the reasoning behind the plates being whited out at night is due to my obnoxiously bright HIDS. It bothers me, but the main reason I got the camera is to protect myself from fraud.

The straw that broke the camels back was I was driving home by myself at 4AM and a Explorer in front of my Slammed on his brakes when there was no one else around, of course since I'm one of the crazies that keeps a reasonable following distance I was able to stop in time even in on the ice. I got stopped about 5 feet from him; he then through the truck in reverse and tried to back into me but my 5 Speed Manual is a lot quicker then his Auto we backed up for probably 30-40 ft before he slammed it in drive and took off.

Scary, but that's why I got it.

No, probably should have but his plate was covered in snow and I had been working since 7 that morning; just wanted to go home. On a positive note, it was the kick in the pants I needed to get a cool Dash cam.

After it happened, I looked on the internet and apparently this is a common occurrence all over the world.

Default Not bad.

That's really not that bad considering it's your phone, definitely nice that you can read the plates of other vehicles.

I doubt that this would work for me, I wanted a set it and forget it camera that kept track of my location and speed. Having to put my phone up every time I got in the car and having to delete them would just never happen lol.

Good on you for doing this, it's a good alternative for someone that's not lazy and uber paranoid.

Yeah if you spend any tie at all on liveleak.com there are a million videos like that, just like you described with the reverse. The best is when the dash cam driver plays along for a minute getting yelled at. The look on the ******** face when the victim points to the cam.... priceless

Awesome, did you get the GPS unit as well or just going to use the camera? I wanted to have a speed overlay on the video.

I got just the camera. I couldn't find the GPS unit for sale although I did not look that hard. Do you know what the price is on the GPS unit?

I got mine from Blackboxmycar.com they have the GPS units up for $50, camera itself is $352.40. They also have extra mounts, the 24/7 power kit and the CPL lens for it.

It's a company out of Vancouver BC.

I don't get why the sell the power kit separately because the 500hd has a cut off built in. If the voltage drops below 11.4 or 11.8 it automatically powers off so you can still start your car.

The 24/7 power kit is so the camera will remain on when the car is off, they call it park mode. The camera stays on and will record for 40 seconds if it senses shock or see's motion. So, for example if someone were to side swipe your car, it would record them driving away.

That's the main reason for it.

I'm not sure I know what the difference between that and if the camera was hard wired to the car and in park mode? Regardless if it has the power kit or not its still going to turn its self off if the voltage drops below a certain point.

Regular cigarette power kit = Camera is on when the car is on only.
24/7 Power kit = Camera will stay on when the car is on or off. ie: Park mode.

I agree it is redundant, the GPS unit, 24/7 Power kit and the camera itself all have low voltage shut off built into them and I have all three in my car. The only reason to buy the 24/7 power kit is if you want the motion/shock recording when the ignition is off, the only reason to buy the GPS kit is if you want the Speed overlay + the camera to know where you are.

I guess there is really no reason why you couldn't just go to any Auto store and buy a Cigaret lighter plug and hard wire the camera in using that, as that's basically what the 24/7 kit is. I just prefer to buy what the manufacturer recommends. Besides, having all that extra voltage cut off can't hurt anything.
