I've only had this situation happen once in 6 months and 8k miles.

Compared to the serious problems people who own MK6 (2009-2013) VW TDIs are dealing with (I dumped my 2010 TDI to buy this Impreza), this hard-start thing is a non-issue.

The car will start after a few extra seconds of cranking. There's no risk of damaging the car as you try to start it. I'm not worried about it. Compared to the TDI, this is nothing.

Happened only once...

did you wait for the fuel pump to kick in before turning over the car?

^^ This shouldn't be necessary, and I believe we've heard reports of this problem from people who do give the fuel pump extra time to start up. So I don't believe this is a real solution.

I did the fuel pump wait the other day, cold-start the car, the rpms hover for a second under/around 1k then just when it seems like its going to shut off it shoots up to 2250 rpms and then returning to normal rpms. It turned over like normal, just the rpm fluctuation was ... excessive.

I guess she was in a lazy mood and didnt want to leave the house.

I can't say I've had this happen at all for quite a while. When it did happen when I first got the car, I was living in an apartment complex where my car was parked on a slight incline, the front end higher than the rear. I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

Now, in the house I'm in I have a garage, a level garage. Just a couple more observations.

It's odd though, because I very distinctly remember it not starting at work twice, on level ground. It hasn't happened for months now for me though.

It doesn't happen all the time but I have had at least 5-6 non-starts on the first try before. I've also had it where the non-start is followed by a rough start. I was going to bring it to the dealer but the one I use down here doesn't seem all that great and if folks are saying there is no code I get the feeling I'd be wasting an hour or two of an afternoon for nothing since they can't easily replicate it. I may try running the two tanks of 93 and see if that helps, not an expensive fix although it does seem odd that you should have to do that to avoid the problem... Mine is a 5-speed Sport Premium model, FWIW.

I'm skeptical that premium gas will make any difference. But that's just my uneducated gut feeling.

That does make me think, when I first got the car I filled up with mostly E10 unleaded. After getting on these forums, and doing some testing, I always try to fill up with at least regular 87 octane (most places use 1-2% ethanol in this where I am), preferably E0 87 octane, http://www.pure-gas.org.

I suppose I could fill up the next few tanks with E10 and see what happens.

On average I get 12-14% better mileage with E0 over E10, and only pay 5-8% more.

https://www.fuelly.com/driver/xafen/impreza

My fuelly profile, and I'm very careful to note what type of gas I got, minus one that we didn't note on my recent roadtrip, they're all very accurate descriptions.

The car definitely does better on E0 for mileage, does the engine do enough worse that it could cause a problem like this to manifest?

I picked up my 2013 Impreza Premium 5-spd last night, and parked it in my garage.

This morning it had to crank for many seconds before it kicked over.
I almost let go of the key to try it again; that's how long it took.

I'm interested to see what it when I leave work, since it will have been sitting outside all day.

Just had my 2012 impreza limited 5 door in for its first oil change. Told the service guy I had a hard starting problem. Service work order back from the dealer noted as "programmed ecm for extended cranking".

That doesn't seem right considering you just got it. I'd call wherever you got it and let me em know as soon as possible.

In Omaha, gas at different venues does effect the MPG. The E0-87 does result in better MPG as you indicated. I use Bucky's @60th and Center & 42nd and Grover with good results. The E10-89 will allow you to decrease your City MPG about 2 MPG; but then it costs less.

Glad to see another Husker on the forums.

It fired up instantly after sitting outside at work, in a minor snow storm, for 10 hours. Maybe they just don't like being cooped up in a garage.

OK, a quick question for everyone Did this problem happen to you before or after you took your Subie in for the WQC-39 Recall ECM Reprogramming? I am thinking mine started after the dealership did the recall!

Before the recall for me, and it's only happened 1x in the 8500 miles (6 months) I've had the car. I don't think the recall has anything to do with this behavior.

I have a 2013 Sprt Limtd with approx 2,200 miles. Have not received any recall from Subaru and car has started perfectly (knock on wood) everytime. I do let the guages do their dance before I proceed to turn it over. Not sure if that matters.. Has just become standard operating procedure for me. Makes me feel better I guess.

Ive noticed some of you as well have the same problem as me. Though I have an 01 RS w/ 130k miles, while the most the other posts are from brand new Subies. Itll start up just fine, but noticed it will idle ~2,700 RPM after sitting out in below freezing for the night. Is this normall as well?
Also does anybody else know anything about the seals on the old imprezas? Mine are terrible on the freeway, & now my doors are always frozen shut, any remidies?

I've had trouble starting my '13 impreza premium twice already. I just bought it about two months ago, not very happy. I don't think this should be an issue with a brand new car.

Haven't had any occurrences yet. After inserting key and turning to "ON", I let the gauges finish their sweep before engaging "START". Probably a habit I learned from driving my Mustang because I listen for the fuel pump priming sound with that car before starting the engine.

Had one back on 12/18, the day after I bought the car. It was then fine until this morning when it didn't want to start. I had a failed start followed by a very rough start. Kind of reminded me of the old days when you started a flooded car...

I had the hard start problem this morning. About 24 degrees F and the first time I had the 'problem' over 2,700 miles. I don't usually start the car immediately when turning the key but I don't wait for the gauges to finish their sweep either. I just held the key to crank for a few seconds and she fired up.

It was a similar sensation to what happens (although not as long) as you flash a new map on a WRX/STI with an AccessPort and you don't let the key stay on "IGN" for 5-10 seconds first. This results in having to continuously crank or to back off and wait.

I have the same issue with my 2013 XV Crosstrek. Its happened 5 or 6 times where it does not want to start and I have to employ 2 or 3 cranking sessions to get it going. When it does start it barely starts and starts rough. The most recent time was Christmas morning when I was trying to get the family over to Grandma's house.

Its very embarrassing and frustrating to have a new car with 3000 miles on it be unreliable. The times when it does not want to start seems random, but I have noticed it seems to happen more 1 or 2 days after I manually wash the car with a pressure washer at the local car wash. I'm not washing under the hood or anything crazy. Just a quick 5 min was of the body and a little spraying of the chassis to get the salt off. This could be coincidence and I am still investigating. I will go 2 or 3 weeks without it happening and then I get hit with it.

Last month, I took the car to the Subaru dealer to have it looked at. Unfortunately, they booked the appointment with a entry level mechanic who checked things like the battery and etc and told me everything was fine. When I wasn't happy with that answer he said I would need to make a new appointment with one of their Sr. Mechanics, which I have not done yet. They also suggested I leave the car there overnight so they can see the problem, but I doubt it will happen since its so random.

As an avid mountain biker I wanted to be a Subaru fan boy. This is my first Subaru and while I love the car overall, this issue is making me a little skeptical of the brand quality. My wife doesn't want to drive the car anymore to due to the starting issue.

Keep posting!
