Default Impreza hard start

I just brought my 2012 Impreza to the dealership for this problem last night. I've driven about 16,000 miles with it, and it intermittently will not start on the first try or will take a long time to crank over.

They called and said they ran a computer update to resolve the long crank time.

We'll see if that works...

I didn't know there was a computer update for that problem. I thought the TSB solution was shims for adjusting the cam position sensors.

I didn't have a CEL on and did they find any codes in the system. They updated the ECM to a new firmware version and sent me on my way.

It promptly happened again a day later but since I had no CEL on, I doubt anything can be done.

Again, there's always the solution I mentioned above (shimming the cam position sensors).

Yeah, my Impreza hasn't done that in many, many months (like 5 or 6 months). So I'm not worried about it.

To my knowledge, the only firmware update I've received was for the coolant temp recall, so unless they also gave me the ECU update at the same time, I don't have it.

there is a tsb that refers to hard starting and an ecu update, so I'm not sure if that is the same update or not.

Yeah I gave the dealer both TSB's and they said since no codes were thrown, they won't do anything.

I did the same, but at least in my case they found an ecm update

Default 2012 Impreza Hard to start? Fails to start the first time?

I am having this same problem. Very frustrating living in a cold climate. I installed a remote starter and some it does not start on first try. Thought maybe it was the remote starter but I am experiencing the same problem when I start with a key.

Seems like a manufacturers problem. Recall?

There are a couple TSB's that may or may not help you. They don't directly deal with this problem though.

Right, it might be the result of improperly aligned camshaft position sensors (there are four of them). I believe the TSB has the technician install some kind of shims beneath the sensors to bring them into alignment.

Had a minor manifestation of this issue crop up once about 2 months ago. Cranked for a while before firing - by the time I thought about turning the key back to OFF because it was taking so long, it finally started. Have been unable to duplicate since.

Hard start yesterday. Today, CEL has come on with the cruise light flashing and the traction light illuminating in rare instances. It is not the gas cap. Appt Thursday afternoon. 1200 miles. Sheesh.

Mine has only ever failed to start the first try once in a year. But it often "stumbles" when it starts. It's kinda like "ok, I guess I'll turn over". It drives fine after, but it often does this hesitation.

I have been trying to keep the gas above 1/4 tank (especially in the winter), and letting the gauges do a full sweep before starting. It seemed to help a little, but still iffy.

Fresh oil change, new air filter, OEM battery, and 15k on the clock. 13 Sport CVT.

My car stumbled once or twice when it started. Freaked me out too. I try to let the gauges do a full sweep before starting as well but yeah, I agree it is still iffy. A little over 1,700 miles right now. All stock and OEM, haven't changed anything yet.

At first I thought it was just it being ~19 degrees, the car sitting outside all day, and the crappy OEM batteries CCA's (what, like 320?!). But I remember the iffy starts over summer time too.

When I go in for my inspection next month I'm gonna have them check for these advisories, as well as tighten my e-brake up. It's a bit sloppy.

I think there is a recall on the crank possition sensor on our cars, causes hard start.

Taking my car in for it's first oil change today @4pm, and actually had the hard start this morning. I will inquire about any tsb for it.

Got off early, service guys said that there is no recall or tsb about hard starts or crank sensors.

I'm pretty sure that's incorrect, but I'm sure someone else will confirm it. The TSB I'm thinking of isn't for "crank sensors", though. It's for the camshaft position sensors, of which there are four on this car. As I recall, the camshaft position sensors might need to be "shimmed" in order to be positioned correctly.

Ahh. I only saw DNA's post.

It's funny that the tsb you referred to is about the cam sensors. With a mere 200 miles on it, I got a CEL with a code for the camshaft positioning sensors. After the dealer checked the cam spacing and couldn't find anything wrong, SOA told them to swap them with each other (they told me there were two, not four).

No, there are four. Two are the intake camshaft position sensors (two: left and right), and two are exhaust camshaft position sensors (two: left and right). This is a typical boxer engine configuration.

I guess it was one of the pairs they must have been referring to. Thanks for the boxer info!

Obviously, whatever they did then didn't prevent me from having a hard start this morning.
