Default Subaru reverse camera that replaces license plate light

Has anyone installed one of these rear view cameras before?

It says it's for a Subaru Forester or Legacy, but doesn't look to hard to make it fit an Impreza.

What year imprezas does it fit? I bought a license plat bolt one but haven't installed it yet. I would rather have something more plug and play that I can reverse instead of drilling holes.

I sent the seller an email about what years it fits, I'll order one and give a review if it fits a 2011.

I'm fairly certain this is meant for newer subarus (I think this is a copy of a uk/jdm option).

I'm surprised no one has seen this before.... guess I'll have to get one and try it out with my bugeye.

Well, just ordered one.

Ships from China, so it will probably take a while before I get it.

I wasn't confident enough ordering one after getting this response from the seller.

"
Hi my friend, thank you very much for your very friendly/polite question about our item , generally speaking, this item can fit with 2011 impreza sedan , thanks a lot again . "

I think I still have one I ordered from a different seller a while back. It fit my 08 sedan perfectly, but even though it said it was NTSC video system it was not. This doesnt generally matter if you are hooking to an aftermarket radio cause most accept either signal, but sadly the factory NAV did not. I might still have it in the garage in the original box if anyone is interested. I will check.

i ordered one like this from a seller on amazon, there a re a couple issues with this type of camera.

1- your license plate lights are not screwed in, they are pressed in with a clip. so the screws on each end mean you would be screwing directly into the car

2- the housing was cheaply made and they used a hot glue gun to seal the internals

3- the attached plug ends are large and not removable which means you need a decent sized hole to pass them through

i ended up returning the unit i had and shelled out 140 for a pioneer nd5, light years ahead of one of these sketchy ebay/amazon ones...

You must have a hatch, not a sedan, in which what you are saying is correct. On the sedan they are screwed into the trim panel above the license plate.

I'm not expecting anything great, but it's cheap and it's a pretty cool concept.

well the best advice i can give is to test fit the unit and be sure its the on you want to use before you commit to ripping apart the car and wiring it in, that part is a bitch

If that was directed at me I know all about that...

I have had it working with an NTSC camera for months now, which is what that was supposed to be when i ordered it.

That sounds like the same kind that a few people bought (and cursed at) on the Forester forums (this thread, starting at post #24). Those cameras actually do output some facsimile of NTSC, but apparently off spec just enough that the OEM Kenwood Navi can't mix the camera's video signal with the graphics and text that the Navi adds ("Check surroundings..." and parking guide lines).

I'd love to find someone who works in a video production company who can plug that camera into a signal analyzer to see just how far off it is.

Since that was quite awhile ago, I wonder if that camera manufacturer has fixed the problem on current units.

I do still have it. I actually tried them from two different sellers at two different times, both said they were NTSC video system. Sadly, neither were. They both looked like the same camera, but came in different (obviously cheap chinese) packaging. I still have one of the two, think I put the other on for someone that had an aftermarket nav unit.

We tested the one I have now at work a few months back. Had a monitor that switched back and forth between PAL and NTSC input, NTSC was liney and B&W, switched to PAL and it worked fine

That's different, then. The Forester owner in the UK tried his camera into several devices, and it worked when all of them were set for NTSC (and didn't work when they were set to receive a PAL signal). That included the Navi's aux input (when that was set for NTSC, but not for PAL). I think the owner in Australia tried similar tests.

So their cameras were definitely some form of NTSC, just not "proper" enough.

Yours outputting PAL is a different issue. Probably got labeled wrong somewhere in the assembly line. There might be a switch, jumper, or PC board trace inside to switch that (probably not worth the effort to check, though).

Do you guys remember if those cameras were CMOS cameras or CCD camera's?

The seller claims on this listing that this is the newer "better" CCD camera.
