Default NJ lawmakers to slow drivers

Quote:
One of my biggest pet peeves is slow drivers in the left lane. New Jersey lawmakers are now planning on penalizing slow drivers who clog up the state’s highways and aggregate their fellow drivers.
State Senator Donald Norcross (D) has sponsored a bill that would toughen the penalties for slow-drivers traveling in the left lane.
“Being trapped behind a slower vehicle is one of the biggest triggers for road rage,” he told the Philadelphia Inquirer last week. “Some people have told me the fines we’re proposing are not high enough. They said, ‘It should be execution.’”

Norcross’ bill proposes an increase of the minimum penalty from $50 to a $100 and the maximum penalty from $100 to $300.
Police officers gave out 5,127 tickets in 2011 under the state’s existing failure-to-keep-right laws.

It should be a $1000 fine, for anyone not keeping right, thats for all lanes. Too many people hog the lanes, even middle ones rather then move over and allow traffic to pass. Believe it or not, I actually make better time staying in the slow lane and passing slower cars when needed. In fact more often than not, there is no one in the slow lane! People just sit in the middle and highspeed lanes and go the speed limit or slower.

I think it would be easier to just specify a min/max speed limit for each lane. This limit only operational on non busy hours.

Left lane - 75mph only, no trucks. Burst of 80mph allowed to pass only.
Middle - 65-70. Cars and trucks
Right - 45-65.

I say this because eventually there will be times when left and middle lane cars will be going at the same speed, and none will move. And this is why people get cut off in the highway.
This happens quite frequently here and I end up passing both on the right lane. My guess is they say "were already going over the speed limit".

Deceptive headline is deceptive. Should read "NJ lawmakers to slow drivers: move over or be fined" or something similar. Fragment as written could imply that NJ lawmakers' bill is intended to slow drivers down.

Doesn't that completely miss the point? Get out of the left lane, regardless of how fast you're going.

75 MPH in the left is still going to result in people getting all kinds of pissed at you, mile long line of cars building up behind you, etc.

Get out of the left lane if you're not passing someone, period.

That means move right at 75 mph, 85 mph, 105 mph.

That's what this law addresses. It forces people to either speed up, or slow down, and get out of the left lane.

You're proposal wouldn't do this. Someone could be holding up a line of cars trying to do 80 in the left. And the same rage, traffic, etc. will build.

Now you'll have cars trying to do 80-85, diving into the 65 MPH lane to get around Mr. 75 in the left. Nothing would get better, or safer.

Yep, just the hell out of the left lane once you notice someone behind you looking to go faster than you are. Yes, officially there is a maximum speed limit, but don't play police, just move over and let the person pass. Unfortunately, there was an arsehat in OT that felt entitled to go "fast enough" in the left lane and then cockblock when others would try to pass him on the right (by going faster and not letting them in).

I can understand when all lanes are moving at roughly the same clip, but even then I try to move my ass over. A lot less stress than worrying about tailgaters to boot.

Generally when all lanes are moving it the same clip its because someone somewhere ahead is being one of these asshats sitting in the left lane but not traveling faster then the right lane and no one can get around them.

I was once 5 cars behind some idiot on the parkway (down in southern jersey where it is two lanes) in the left lane doing 45 mile an hour. The raod was empty in front of her but she was causing congestion in the form of a line of cars behind her that stretched as far as my mirrors could see because the right lane was moving moderately faster and at those speeds NO ONE COULD GET OUT FROM BEHIND HER.

After about 10 minutes I finally managed to get my self next to her. Surprise dumb bitch yapping on her phone.

I would give my left nut to have the same rules here in the US, as they do on the German Autobahn (left lane is ONLY for passing) and everyone must drive on the right. And if someone behind you flashes their lights at you, you have to move over to the right, because your not driving fast enough. But sadly, since people don't really appreciate the privilege (not a right) of driving, they don't really value it. Plus, Speed-ticketing is big business here also. Cops would fine themselves jobless if they didn't have that.

If driver licenses were the same price here as they are in Germany (about 1000 euros = $1300+) people would give a damn about driving and losing their licenses. And if you made Drunk-Driving or driving while distracted and major offense (for you freaking cellphone texting a-holes) it would carry a punishable offense that would require extremely high fines (cellphone) and very long jail time (Drunk Driving) things would be different.

But anyone can call the ticket clinic and get the drunk driving charges/bills lowered. Which is bullcrap.

That only works in the sections without speed restrictions. It will never work here unless there are lane-based speed limits (or people are allowed to speed if they're in the act of passing someone) as vapore0n suggested.. because people will just drive along-side each other doing 5 over the limit all day long.

I was trying to address the need for a speed difference between lanes. Make it legal to be faster than the guy next to you.

I think I might have stated it wrong. Left lane should still be for passing only. But then that lanes becomes the "exclusive lane'. I'm on it so now you have to move over for me.

Endless loop of frogs leap.

There are so many drivers crawling in the left lanes in and around the SF Bay Area. It's just insane. The worst is that most of these drivers seem oblivious to the fact that they are actually blocking traffic. That's why I ride my motorcycle whenever I can; I just can't deal with the frustration anymore.

This is great, except this law is never enforced, ever. There's just no fixing the parkway

They should also mandate a cell phone ban while driving and impose a $250 fine, 2 points, and have to re-take a drivers safety course.

Imagine all the $$ they would rack up while increasing safety on the roads?

This is already imposed in many states. Here all they did is increase the fine.

Anyway since the biggest correlation to highway deaths is not speed, but the deviation in speed it makes sense to tell slow drivers to DRIVE WITH THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC.

It's also illegal here in MD. They even have big signs up all along I-95 and I still see morons talking/texting or playing with their vaginas while driving. It's a matter of enforcing it and doing it stringently as they do with drinking and driving.

The problem with this is who says how fast is what in say the 3rd lane? Here in CT people still want to pass you and you are doing 85 in the 3rd lane..

Something like that happened to me today i ended up passing this land rover that cut in front of me in the 3rd lane and I had to drop from 75 to 50 because they thought it was cool.. So I went around.. Then I have this guy in a Charger that got stuck behind the LR and he ended up driving in the breakdown lane in the 3rd lane to get around the car.

reminds me of this video I saw yesterday

lol how he pulled forward past the van then slowed down and put the lights on

You are missing the point. You should not be riding the left lane regardless of how fast you are going. Once you pass slower traffic you should move to the right. Period.

It kill me that people think just because they are going the speed limit or higher they don't need to move over for faster traffic.
