So the HG job on my '99 Legacy GT was my first engine pull...and my second! However, I did it with some friends who have a lot more experience with cars than I do. Not Subaru experts however. So I could use some thoughts.
My problem is ticking. Which sounds like it is coming from cylinder number 2. We replaced both head gaskets of course, as well as having the heads machined by a fellow who claimed that he knew Subarus pretty well. Having taken apart the engine again we still have not been able to find the source of the ticking. This ticking actually sounds like the tick of a DI engine, but much louder. The engine runs better than ever however. We originally thought that maybe it was a shim, but after looking at all of them, they all measured to spec. My roommate suggested that perhaps a blocked oil channel was the problem and used compressed air to clear any debris. Nada. Any thoughts on what could be at work here?

one of the timing belt pulleys? worth looking at. might be rubbing or hitting something. use a stethoscope to find where exactly its coming from

I had a bad new-style timing belt tensioner that made a similar noise. Run it with the covers off, if you haven't already.

Almost sounds like the valve lifter noise, but yowza, that's loud.
