Post Check Engine Light

Well, I had a scary surprise in my new WRX Wagon. After my first fill up I was driving along, feeling happy. I look down at my dash and see the check engine light. Fantastic! Here I am in the middle of nowhere. Turn the car off, turn the car on - the thing is still glowing. Call Subaru roadside - recording tells me the wait will be long (thanks) I hang up. I look through the manual and see a little blurb that if you don't seal the gas cap completely, you could get a light. I open the gas door and see a little sticker warning me that not sealing the cap can cause a check engine light. Later I call my dealer - he tells me it happens all the time. It seems the WRX has the most sensitive emissions system around. He even warned me not leave the ignition on during a fill up (to listen to the radio) because that could trip it too. He said the light can go out on its own, but sometimes needs to be reset (anyone know how to do that). Mine finally went off after another fill up. How much you want to bet that if I ever get a real light I will think it is the gas cap?

well i think resetting the ecu in the rex would be the same as an RS, but odn't quote me on that. Disconnect the battery for 30 mins, reconnect it, start the engine, let it idle for around 30 minutes, turn off engine, start up again and your done.

IBTL...

Check the WRX Non-Tech forum.

This really is nothing new. Take the keys out of the ignition when you fill up, you cannot listen to the radio.

Keys even in the accessory position will engage (turn on) the ECU. The ECU will see a pressure loss in the fuel system, but not trip the CE light until many miles later.

Just take out your keys.
