Default Jeep Liberty Replacement To Feature Downsized Pentastar V-6

Quote:
Chrysler is reportedly planning a ‘downsized’ 3.2-liter version of its award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine.

The new engine is said to debut in the replacement for the Jeep Liberty next January at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

The information was revealed to Automotive News (subscription required) by company insiders familiar with the project as well as union official Bruce Baumhower.

Baumhower also revealed that the new engine will be matched with a nine-speed automatic supplied by Germany’s ZF. With the extra gear ratios, the smaller 3.2-liter engine is said to be comparable in performance with the current 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6.

The new engine is expected to be built at the same Trenton North Engine plant in suburban Detroit that recently built the one millionth Pentastar V-6.

The Jeep Liberty replacement, meanwhile, will be built at Chrysler’s Toledo North Assembly plant in Ohio. The plant is currently undergoing renovations to retool it for the new SUV.

Further down the track, Chrysler is expected to replace its entire six-cylinder gasoline range with Pentastar V-6 engines. Another variant with Fiat’s Multi-Air valve-adjustment technology is also planned. On top of this, there have been reports that a high-performance twin-turbocharged Pentastar V-6 is also planned and could feature in Maserati’s upcoming ‘baby’ sedan.

Bring back the Cherokee!

Jeep already has the Compatriot twins for not going offroad and the now fully independent suspension'd Grand Cherokee for soft roading.

Should be "upside-downsized" for the Jeep.

Jeep Liberty drives like a 1989 Kia Sportage. They better change the whole model.

Chrysler/Jeep sucks. I am sick of hearing about Panstar or whatever - not impressed...

iirc, the Liberty is moving to a unibody...less truck-like SUV. Still supposed to lose to much ability. But they are going to use the wrangler as the full-on off-roader

That's good. We have a 2008 Dodge Nitro (same thing), and it's a giant, flaming piece of crap. EVERY SINGLE person in my office hates driving it, though since I'm the field tech, I do most of the seat time.

It's been surprisingly reliable (just hit 100K miles two weeks ago), but other than that, it's an outright miserable driving experience.

there is a reason they stopped production on the nitro.

Preaching to the choir.

But, if you read reviews online, the fans of the car are very dedicated. 'Course I think they're all mentally unstable.
