Default 1st gear whinnying noise

My 2003 WRX 5 speed manual is making a whinnying noise when engaging to first gear without accelerating on the gas. The sound disappears when the first gear is fully engaged. Is my clutch going out?

Are you stopped when it whines?

When you shift into a gear, the transmission will synchronize the gears before engaging. You could just be hearing the gears / clutch spin up to the right speed. This is normal.

At a stand still, the gear is on 1st and slowly letting off the clutch, as it makes contact and grabs first gear halfway it whines. Hope that helps.

Hmmm. Not sure, I'd have to hear it. Might be normal... If it really bothers you, take it to the dealer or a shop you trust.
