Default Chevroletís mysterious new model is creating lots of buzz on the Web

Quote:
Chevy is developing a new model that will soon be used by its NASCAR teams. The "Impala" will be dropped at the end of the NASCAR season for a new nameplate. This is possibly the vehicle that former GM product czar Bob Lutz had mentioned a few years ago. Another news tidbit that had caught fansí attention was the suggestion that the race car will closely resemble the production version. Chevrolet has also said that it wonít have the Malibu, Spark or Sonic badge and that it will have a new nameplate. Chevy wonít confirm if it will revive any of its nameplates though.

Lutz said years ago that Chevrolet had to have a rear-wheel drive performance sedan to attract buyers to the brand. Back then, Lutz was vice chairman for product development at General Motors. What he described seemed to be a type of spiritual successor to the 1994-1996 Impala SS, says Autonews. That car was distinguished by the Corvette V-8 powering it. Credit for this highly collectible car goes to Jim Perkins, the former head of Chevrolet. Lutz said that Holden will develop this new generation Impala SS based on the subsidiary's rear-wheel drive architecture.

In 2009, Pontiac had a version named the G8 GTP, which was powered by a 402-hp 6.2-liter V-8. Chevy didnít get one but thatís probably due to GMís bankruptcy. In 2011, Chevy showed the Caprice, a V-8-powered sedan from Holden thatís targeted at law enforcement agencies. A demand then resulted for the U.S. civilian version of the Caprice.

I dont get why they just bring over Holden badged cars and sell them at Chevy dealerships. Make it a performance marque like Dodge is doing with SRT now.

And they can call that performance marque... Pontiac?

Yeah. I bet it will be based on the the Holden/G8. No need to reinvent the wheel when they already have one that works. It was just sad that Pontiac got the axe when the G6 and G8 were just starting to make it.

Well, it was sad to begin with, when Pontiac had no more excitement than any other GM/Chevy. Just more boring badge engineering.

I would love it if they would rebadge the Holden Commodore SS or Monaro(or Holden Coupe 60 concept) as a Chevelle SS, while they are at it they can bring the SS Ute over here and rebadge it as an El Camino SS.

Rumors circulating that it'll be based off the latest "VF" Commodore platform from Holden and potentially be called "Impala SS" or just "SS", from what I've read online.

Just be sure to offer three pedals in the "base" v8 config this time (vs GTP-only last time).

Is there a market for a giant gas guzzling V8 sedan these days? I cant imagine it getting anything like Corvettes fuel economy due to weight and aerodynamics. Sure, there will be followers and core enthusiasts but does GM really think it will be a mainstream car with gas prices likely to hit $5 a gallon this year?

I think this is the new Caprice? Unless they are basing it off another Holden?

There still is, and with new precise fueling technology and transmissions with 7th and 8th gears for low rev highway travel you can still get OK fuel econ.

I drive a 4 cylinder compact car that gets 22 MPG on a good day...I'd be up for a fun V8 sedan that gets around that on regular gas.

My 04 GTO with an LS1 in it got better gas mileage then my WRX on the highway, if I averaged the city/highway gas mileage I am sure it equals the WRX. I could get 27mpg on the highway at 70mph in the GTO, I haven't seen over 23mpg in the WRX. Not to mention the GTO would smoke this WRX from a roll or at passing speeds, etc, life isn't lived a 1/4 mile at a time.

I get 24mpg+ highway using regular gas in my G8. Displacement on Demand really helps with this (running on 4 cyl for light loads).

I just hope that the short wheel base comes back.

A very tall 6th gear (manual) nets great highway fuel economy in LSx cars.
