They are using a Cosworth CS600 EJ25 (~$11,000) but its still just an EJ25. Happen to have a fully built EJ257 sitting on the engine stand in my house I was planning on using in a 2dr impreza but sure would be nice in my BRZ....that will have to wait until the warrenty runs out though.

Speedhunters did a pretty thorough article on the UP Garage BRZ with an EJ257 swap. It apparently doesn't fit the stock transmission so they used a modified STI dogbox and some pretty extensive fabrication to the frame. Doesn't look like it will be an easy swap.

We fit it to the Up Garage/Droo-P car a few weeks ago. There's not really any extensive fabrication to the frame, but then, the entire engine bay was gutted of the normal wiring harness/accessories, then we shoe-horned the ej25 in. So not exactly like you'd be simply swapping the motor in, no.
The standard gearbox in the BRZ/FR-S uses a different bellhousing than the ej25, plus the starter motor is swapped to the other side. Seriously, you won't see a lot of easy swaps of ej25's in the BRZ/FRS in the future, that's why we are working on turbo kits for the current motor that's in it. Regards, Paul Hansen |

I didn't believe it would be a direct swap at all since the FA physically smaller than EJ's are. Was hoping that the ej would bolt up though. Oh well, if I ever do a swap it looks like it will get an american v8.

EJ's wont bolt up because it dosent have a Subaru transmission. It uses a Lexus IS tranny.
Someone will end up making a new bell housing that will allow an EJ to fit easily. |

Shouldn't need an entire bell housing just an adapter plate (or bell housing milled and adapter plate). Personally if it got an EJ I'd prefer the impreza sti 6spd with it, remove the front diff. and add a block off plate where the axles go in and bam a 6spd with a little more top end. (STI 3.90 FD vs BRZ 4.10 FD) Plus a STI 6spd in known to be good for ~500awhp so it should be good to go. Stock EJ257 with a tune and stg2 mods is 300awhp, add a little for rwd vs awd and the brz would have decent power.

And if you're going to swap out the whole drivetrain, why play around with Subaru parts at all? ![]() |
