Default Makeover of Honda’s premium brand Acura will start this spring

2013 Acura ILX Hybrid
Quote:
Honda Motor Co. is set to begin the redesign of its Acura luxury brand this spring. The timing could hardly be better since aside from the redesigned RDX compact crossover and the new ILX small sedan coming in spring, a preview of the refurbished RL flagship due this fall will be displayed at the New York motor show next month.

Also, the volume-leading TL sedan and MDX mid-sized crossover are prepared for revamp for 2013. By the end of 2014, the highly publicized NSX supercar is set to arrive. Six years ago, executives at Honda made a decision to bring the Acura brand upscale. They also cancelled the compact RSX hatchback, which is the brand's entry-level luxury offer and Integra's successor.

The timing could not have been worse because in less than three years, many of Acura's rivals publicized their intentions to provide products that suit the niches of Integra and the RSX. In addition, the worldwide economy had fallen and many buyers of premium automobiles pared back their purchases. Acura will go back to the entry-luxury segment with the ILX sedan in May. The vehicle will have no hint of the RSX or Integra's sportiness. The brand is optimistic that it will appeal to the Generation Y clients.

According to Acura Division general manager Jeff Conrad, the downfall of Lehman Brothers transformed the "philosophy for luxury purchases."

He explained that people are more logical in their buying decisions, taking pride in the transaction they strike." He noted that the Gen Y "aspires to luxury," but require "a little help getting there." The new range will showcase the ILX, TL, TSX and RL sedans. Conrad stated that the luxury brand has no intentions to eliminate any of these four sedans despite the fact that there is some overlap. He further explained that they have had a "pretty strong reliance" on sport-utilities and that they want to strengthen their sedans. He also disclosed that they are remaking the entire range "over the next few years."

Default Next-generation Acura RL to feature NSX technology -

Quote:
Honda President Takanobu Ito has revealed some new details about the next-generation Acura RL.
Speaking with Automotive News, Ito said the redesigned flagship will feature the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system from the NSX. He declined to go into specifics, but commented "The thinking behind the RL and NSX systems is the same, but the NSX's will be more sports-car focused."
Additional information is limited, but the system will reportedly feature two electric motors that power the rear wheels. It will be backed up by a petrol engine that motivates the front wheels.
Nothing is official, but speculation suggests a concept will be introduced at the New York Auto Show.

Honda is a joke comapred to what they used to do. Acura is even worse. It's fascinating to see these companies (Honda, Toyota, Nissan) morphing into the GM of the 90s. **** cars, lackluster offerings, recalls, and bad response to the market.

The entire Honda brand (at least stateside) needs a makeover. Badly. But hey, you have to start somewhere.

IDK I think the stoned guppy look is better than the hawk nose.

They are damned close in ugliness though. At least a Mazda 6 and RX8 do not look that bad.

slapping new sheetmetal on cars with torqueless engines does not a "change" make.

RX8 is gone, and I very much disagree on the Mazda6.

Hardly.
The newest Mazdaspeed3, Mazda5, the new Nissan Quest and Versa, the new Civic, the last-gen 2.5i, are all uglier and just from the past five years.

The sales figures for the ZDX and RL are terrible, and on the Honda side, the Crosstour, Insight and CR-Z are way down too.

Basically all of Honda's recent experiments have failed.

When I was shopping mid size SUVs a few months ago, I was surprised to see how large a percentage of Acura's sales the MDX represents. They sell hardly any RDX or RL, and virtually no ZDX.

it's certainly polarizing, and those skinny little tires make the rear look pretty weird.

Prelude/RSX successor with SH-AWD, and a DSG or manual gearbox choice?

If not... I will resume not giving a second thought to Honda or Acura when it comes to buying another car.

Accord Crosstour is the same vehicle... and uglier than the ZDX.

I don't understand why Crosstour, and ZDX have to be as big as they are?

They are based on Pilot/MDX, not Accord/TL/TSX, yet they are heavier and bulkier than sedans, while being less practical than SUV/CUVs.

Why not just have a sporty 5-door version of Accord, and re-badge it as TSX as well? Why does it have to be gargantuan and tall? And gargantuan and tall might as well have the full cargo capacity of the Pilot/MDX.

I saw the ILX at the Detroit Auto Show. Holy crap that thing is awful. They didn't even bother to disguise that it isn't much more than a rebadge of a Civic that has been widely panned.

It will take years for Honda to crawl out of this hole--it takes a while to design and develop new products after your last few generations didn't go over well.
