I've never had this problem, so I don't know what to tell you exactly. What I would do, is start inspecting all the lines to the fuel tank, from the filler neck to the tank. On my 02 wagon, there is an access panel under the rear seat that gives me access to the top of the fuel pump, look there for any leaks.

Honestly though, I'm just guessing and letting you know what I would do if I had the problem. It could be that you have a blockage in the filler neck, but I don't know for sure.

I know you don't want to take it to a shop, but unless the car can sit for a while, while you take it apart to find the problem, you may have no choice. You may even have to remove the fuel tank, but that is a serious PITA, since it's a "saddle" tank, and you have to remove the drive shaft to get it out.

If it were me, and I couldn't figure it out, I would find out how much the dealer wanted to tell me whats wrong. Hopefully it isn't any more than $100... then I would fix it myself.

Whatever you do, good luck.

Are you sure they are bad? Is the fuel pressure low? If not, there really is no need to change the pump.

You're spending a few hundred dollars on a guess, rather than take it to someone that has probably seen this issue before, and can tell you exactly what's wrong.

Why are you against having it looked at by the dealer, or other qualified shop?
