Default Death in my other family....

I just got this off the New England DSM list. Some of you here may know Gus. For those that don't, he was sort of a pioneer of sorts with making a sickeningly fast Turbo K car and AWD MiniVan that ran at NED. He will be missed.
--------
This post is made with great sadness.

I recieved this info on another list & confirned it with the CT state police.

Yesterday Gus was riding his new motorcycle and was involved in an accident.

He died from his injuries.

He will be missed dearly.

Oh wow. That's no good. I never got a chance to meet Gus in person but I talked to him on the New England DSM list many times. He was a great guy and a true DIYer.

was his van the astro van that ran up there? Im sorry to hear of his loss Did the accident involve another vehicle or was it a single vehicle accident?

Seems like he would be an accomplished rider and just goes to show you never know... be safe everyone.

From this pic on website it looks like it was FWD. I think I remember him talking about having a dual stage boost controller for the track also.

I think you and I were just talking about him on Sunday actually. Nothing was better than Gus' Home Depot boost controller he could tell you how to make for $7.

Yep, and in OT there is a thread on Turboed american cars where he came up due to his minivan. A real loss to the grassroots racing scean. He was beyond clever, a real turbo god.

Wow, sorry to hear. Best wishes to his family.. I've been considering picking up a cheap, used motorcycle to tool around on, but with stories like this, I think I'll be sticking with four-wheelers.. Too wild out there.

Motorcycles are bad...

Well, idiots in this area who don't see people on motorcycles are worse. I just hate stories like this, no matter what the cause was. It's just sad. I have many friends (here on this board and at home) that have bikes, and stories like this just worry me. I lost a good friend of mine in NJ just before I moved here (He was 22) from a motorcycle accident. It wasn't his fault, and he was 1 mile from home. It's really hard when you see how it can affect family and friends first hand. I won't get on a bike, at all.

Wow that's sad to hear.

I had the chance to meet Gus and talk to him for a few hours one night in the stands at the drags. Nice guy and never out of reach for those of us that aren't as clever with cars as he was.

He will be missed.

Exactly. I don't care how cheesy this sounds - I'm engaged and have more to think about than myself. A motorcycle isn't worth the risk, doesn't matter if you know what you are doing.

If I want 50 mpg I'll get a Golf TDI. (Yes I know, more reasons for a motorcycle than mpg, etc..)

Well,
I just want to state I in no means wanted this to go into a "motorcyles good/bad" post. It doesn't really matter. It just a real sad thing to see this happen to someone who has lots of people who will miss him.

The website really puts in into perspective. I never knew him, but can tell he would have been a great guy to talk to. Hopefully his website will stay up as a tribute.

I thought about his site staying up as well and im not sure how it works. I would assume someone would have to continue paying for his account there at earthlink i think it was for it to remain there. Perhaps someone with some server space may want to save his site and mirror it on their space so it remains up. The site definitely does have some invalueble information on it. I have already saved a small portion of it for my own use when I get one of my turbo cars done.

Paul dont worry bud, I still want a motorcycle maybe its because im young single and foolish, who knows but I still do want one. Things can happen any day with whatever we drive. Live life to its fullest with no regrets, im sure its something that Gus (from what I have seen, read and heard as i've never met him) would also agree to.

Looked back at the shelby list for details, here is one from gary Donovan:

With much sadness I was woken up this morning to hear of Gus' untimely
demise in a motorcycle accident last night.

Details are sketchy but what is known is that the driver of the other
vehicle was at a stop sign & then pulled out in front of Gus (Who didn't
have any stop sign at all due to being on the main road.) It's not known if
the other driver was under the influence or simply just didn't see Gus and
pulled out in front of him. The final police report could take weeks.

The wake is Thursday afternoon, the funeral is on Friday at 2:00.

I just returned from Gus' house and that's all the information I have.

Set Perntiss and myself are working on setting up a fund for people looking
to make donations. Gus had never made any financial arrangements if he
should happen to pass away and we would like to ease Dolores' burden as much
as possible.

This is a very tragic event, it was an honor to be called one of Gus'
friends and to have his company.

Gary Donovan

p.s. please pass this along to the other lists, I'll post more details of
the wake and funeral when I get them.

They were also discussing a paypal account to collect up money for his widow.

Indeed.. I veered it off course a little since it's been on my mind.

Best of luck with a memorial fund! Sounds well deserved.

I posted this to the shelby dodge mailing list. Was contacted by the Secretary of the New England Shelby Dodge Chapter asking if she could use the posting for the next news letter that would be dedicated to gus.

It's sad that news like this is what brings me back to the Shelby dodge
list. I was a lister a few years back, and like many of you also benefited
from Gus being so kind and helpful. I've since parted ways with the Shelby
community but Gus was one of those names that was mentioned regardless of
what car community you belonged to. It's a real loss to the whole turboed
car hobby. The members on www.i-club.com are interested in donating money
to the paypal fund for his widow. Alot of us had met him at New England
drag way, or just heard of the minivan that was beating up on the V-8's.
It's always strange when some one so well known and liked dies, because you
never even consider that one day they won't be there. And once they are
gone, you don't know how things will go on. He'll be missed by more than he
could have ever realized. I'll pass word around of the paypal account once
details are setup.

I know where that is, unfortunately I'm working...

that's one of the reasons why driving a motorcycle is so dangerous around here- people don't pay attention.. it's sad really

speed safely
