Yes that's only for the AC belt. Belt tension should still be ok if you didn't loosen the locknut. If you're afraid the broken piece will go flying into the belts just remove the loose part, it's shot anyway. Get a new one from the dealer, and check the idler itself while you're at it as they fail often. On an '02 it's very likely that the pulley bearing is gone.

You and pretty much every other subaru owner has broke that part. Personally, I broke my about 6 years ago, and still haven't replaced it... When I've needed to tension the belt, I just got myself a chunk of wood against the pulley to lean on while I tightened it.

Wow, usually the bolt just bends.....nice job. Just replace the whole thing, ac idler pulley included.
You can drive it, under caution.......

so the weak plastic piece bends the relatively beefy steel bolt? Search around, LOTS of people have broken that piece off, it will break even with the idler bolt loosened sometimes. Really poor design, that should have never been made of plastic.

^ The bolt bends? Nah that plastic piece breaks before it bends steel lol. I broke it too, just go buy a new pulley.

I broke mine 8 months ago. Ordered a replacement part 3 months ago. I'll probably replace it tomorrow.

Yes, the bolt can bend when the retaining nut is not loosened first. And that is unfortunately speaking from experience. LOL at that.....oh I guess you are, cuz I bent my S**** but that was like 7 years ago, other people have done it though....... you know you did it just admit it....
