Default Winter tires

Robin,

Will you be organizing a group buy for winter tires this fall?
If so, what kind of price ranges are we to expect?

Thanks

Kal

I doubt I'll be doing a group buy on tires..... Matt organized the summer one..... Something could be done with Pneu Lavoie....

On a side note, if you go to Costco, they usually have winter tire specials around October.... about 2 weeks.... That's how I got my Michelin Artic Alpins....

Yeah,
the summer group buy went well. Let's see if we could find enough people and I'll give them a call. I needed 12 for the summer one, I had 21 people. I'll narrow the tires choice thought, too much different brand in the summer. How about
Toyo Garrit, Bridgestone Blizzax and maybe Nokian Hakkas?

Could bring some speculative price at the Sept Meet??

Go Nokian or go home (assuming you can go anywhere in the first place )

I don't find Nokian the best for Ontario because we cant use the studs!

Yokohama Guardex 720's seems to be an agressive winter tire with good qualities.... For Ottawa, an ice tire better than a true snow tire (for usage) cause there's more chances of freezing rain than crazy amounts of snow....

Hakka Qs are supposed to be fantastic ice tires (some of our local rally guys run them), and hakka 1s are great snow tires even without the studs (although the studs are worth the extra money anywhere you can legally run them, like alberta )

Default Hakka Q's

I liked my Hakka Q's last winter... took me forever to find a dealer that had them available.

I fear ice more than snow in Sothern Ontario, so thats why I went with the Q's.

I went with the Toyos... and they kick butt on snow/ice mixes. On sheer ice, which is what we raced on at Capital City Speedway last year, the Toyos were useless when trying to regain traction coming out of a corner. But I never had any problems with traction while driving on the street.

Cheers.

Yeah, I agree the toyo Garrit are great for 95% of the winter driving. During last winter solo 2, I did fastest time with those on the first run, while the ice was still covered by snow, but then, when sheer ice showed, I looked like a pinball.

So,
would everybody that's interested in this group buy take something like 205/55-16?

I meeting my contact tomorrow. Those Nokians seem very hard to get.

Probably the most 2 popular sizes are going to be:

205-55-16 (for the WRX)

195-65-15 (for the RS)

I'm still good for winter tires (for another year)

I will be needed winter tires for my ride so a group buy would be very nice!

I was thinking of just Michelin Arctic Alpins in 205/55R16 at Costco, but I'm willing to consider alternatives if the price is right. I'm looking for a general purpose snow tire (not a performance snow tire since they give up too much grip for our snowy Ottawa weather)

I'll be awaiting your prices and choices before making a final decision.

Will talk to the tire dealer Monday pm. I'll see what I can do about Nokians, there are only 3 places that sell those in Ottawa...

I'm really interested in a winter tires group buy. Anyone planning a winter rims group buy also?

Regarding the kind of tires we'll get, may I suggest that we go with tires that will last more than one winter in case we get a winter like last year here in Ottawa? I had to shovel my driveway something like 5 times total... There wasn't that much snow!

Mturmel

When you did the summer group buy for 21 people,
what sort of discount were you able to get?

Also, I have 02TS & would like to use my steelies
for winter tires. I believe the stock size for TS
is 195/60R15, does toyo make this size?

Thanks

We got good discount for high and max performance tires. As an exemple, I paid the same price as the tirerack.com for my S-03s, which is hard to beat.

Yes, no problem, toyo makes 15".

Mat,

I know toyo makes 15" tires, however I'm not sure if they make 60R type.
Right now I'm running on oem wrx wheels, & when I checked on "tire calculator" they are 2.7% off the stock 195/60R15, I can live with that for now. I am done with them at the end of this season anyhow. For next summer I will get 205/50R16 which is the perfect match for my TS. Now if I go with 195/65R15 (common size) for winter, then the difference from stock will be almost 4%, and since I will intend to keep them till they're done, that 4% would be too much diference.

You see now why I am trying to make sure I can get
60R size.

Kal,

I would go for a 185-65-15..... that's another common size cause if you remain in the 65's series, lots of manufacturers make that size...

I was looking for that size but Cotco ran out and ended up buying my Michelin Artic Alpin in the 195-65-15 size....

The 195-65-15 is 3.2% larger than the 195-60-15.... but the 185-65-15 is only 1.1% bigger..... that's an ideal size or as close to spec.... for the TS....

Toyo Observe G-O2's...awesome for Ontario, been running them for a while now. Good ice, great snow, and good hydroplane resistance for crappy winter's like last one.
