Default Chevrolet to build the Beat Concept (due 2010)

Chevrolet to build the Beat Concept (due 2010)

http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/news.php?sid=1267&page=1

Quote:
Chevrolet has just announced that its tiny baby, the Beat, will go into production in 2010. It will be sold in the US - and across Europe.

Chevrolet previewed three city car concepts at the New York Auto Show earlier this year. They were the Beat, Groove, and Trax - and Chevy went to a public vote at www.vote4chevrolet.com to decide which one to build.

The results are now in, with 1.9 million votes cast, and the Beat will now go into production in 2010. To tell you the truth, we could have made that decision for Chevrolet: the Beat was easily the best-looking, and most youth-oriented of the tiny trio.

Whether the Beat will appear in exactly the same guise as seen here is another matter. All the company could be drawn into saying was that the Beat will ‘significantly inspire Chevrolet’s next-generation city car, due to make its debut in 2010'.

It'll come to the UK, as well as over 100 other countries, and if it looks anywhere near as good as the Beat, it'll go down very well indeed. Combine that with halo cars like the Camaro, and more mainstream stuff like the future Lacetti, and Chevrolet has a promising future.

According to this article, it WON'T be sold in the US. Instead, the US will get an updated Aveo.

http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9817236-7.html

If this is true, yet another example of a US automaker leaving the US market with the crappy product, and giving their good stuff to the rest of the world. Are we living in some sort of bizzaro world here?!?!

I hope they build it. GM needs a GOOD small car. The Aveo needs to die.

I personally really like the looks of the Beat - doesn't look like any other car on the market. Hopefully it doesn't get too tamed-down as it reaches production.

Default GM considering small, premium MINI-fighter?

Quote:
Business Week reporter David Welch revealed a few days ago that General Motors may be developing a premium small car that targets the same type of customers who might consider a MINI. Dubbed the "micro-premium car", it would be positioned against the aforementioned MINI in the marketplace, as well as the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series.

Under what brand it would be sold wasn't mentioned, and honestly we don't have the foggiest idea what brand besides Cadillac could match up against those heavyweights. At the same time, we have a difficult time imagining Cadillac following the same path downmarket that it did with the ill-fated Cimarron.

GM's Korean Daewoo subsidiary has a number of small platforms that could be used for such a car, but do any offer the dynamics required for a premium small car? Rear-wheel-drive is practically a must for such a car, so then we're looking at the Kappa platform that underpins the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky as a candidate. At the moment, it's the smallest RWD platform in GM's stable.

Where does the Chevy Beat fit into the news of a micro-premium car?

I mean don't get me wrong, I think the Beat is pretty darn cool, and should be built, but it wouldn't be RWD and wouldn't fit into the micro-premium category that was discussed in the Business Week article. A micro-premium car would be more like the BMW 1-series like was mentioned in the article - something that combined small size, with good power and an elevated price. The Beat would probably be the opposite - small, decent power, but cheap.

I thought they were bringing this to the US to compete against the Scion, Honda & Toyota?

They are going top make a limited edition model with feathers in place of foam for the padding of the interior.

It'll be called the Beat Down.

Default Spy Shots: Chevrolet Beat

Quote:
General Motors is scrambling to bring some of its small-car concepts to life as global preferences and oil price pressures drive interest in the segment to new highs. Near the top of the list is the Beat concept, currently in development by GM Daewoo in South Korea. These latest spy shots reveal the car is headed to production, though some changes are in store.

As a concept, the Beat was a front-wheel-drive, three-door hatchback built to be personalized, much like Toyota’s Scion brand, and powered by a 1.2L turbocharged gasoline engine mated to an automatic transmission. A high-tech theme pervaded the cabin, with satellite navigation and a premium stereo despite its small-hatch proportions. The car spied is a five-door, making rear-seat access easier while adhering fairly closely to the concept’s lines. According to the report, the same 1.2L engine shown in the concept is expected to be available in the final car, though the automatic transmission will be optional, with a manual gearbox standard.
The Beat is believed to have been ruled out for U.S. sale because it would not be able to meet federal safety requirements without a significant investment, though rumors of North American sale persist. Its production for other global markets is going ahead at full steam, however, as these photographs show.
Americans won’t be left out in the cold entirely. A replacement to the current Aveo, based on a larger version of either the Groove or Trax concepts shown alongside the Beat when they debuted at last year’s New York Auto Show, is expected to head to production sometime around 2010, though there has been no official confirmation of the model yet.

because this shows exactly how much "americans" know and care about cars. A nation who claims to have built the country "around car" is satisfied by average POS "boat handling" monstrosity with horrible interior and exterior design, poor technology and gas mileage
As long as it has big V8 and tons of cupholders, we don't care
That's why rest of the world hates most of our garbage called cars
