Question Smelly Trunk!

I just bought a 99 Impreza and I think I have a trunk leak. Or atleast the guy put snowy tires in there.

Anyway now my trunk smells really musty.
What would be the best way to clean the carpets?
My father said take everything out, including carpets and the spare
and wash it all down with a ammonia and water mix. Then use a shop
vac and suck all the water up.
So any suggestions?

Removing the bodies and disposing of them before they begin to decompose is critical to maintaining a clean smelling trunk. Blood, urine, feces and other bodily fluids/waste can leave smells that are very difficult to get rid of completely. Ammonia is a good idea, but it may not get rid of the smells to your satisfaction. Commercial cleaning solutions may be necessary.

Try a degreaser first then maybe orange cleaner to clean that all up, that's what I did when I had leaks from the spoiler holes

It happened to my old car before. What i did was take out all carpets. Power wash with soap, sun dry them real good, spray whatever smell u like in there then close it. Let the carpet soak it in. I would put a small bag of real wood charcoal. They obsorbs moisture real good.

That and washing it, I didn't originally have one on from the factory, I just put silicone around the holes and that stopped it

Ok thanks! I don't think my spoilers leakin because there's no water after rain. Could be just from snow in the trunk.

I found some carpet cleaner. Says it cleans and removes odors. I might try it. Kind of a small bottle though. I think il take the carpets out, power wash them with soap, let them sundry, and then if they still smell, or there is any carpets i cant get out il use the carpet stuff. Il post the link to the cleaner. Its from canadian tire.

Also found some Armor-all oxy stuff for carpets and upholstery

Definitely helpful thread. The new Impreza I bought has a leak in the trunk I'll have to clean it out... I'm going to have a busy spring break haha. I'll probably just get in there with some really hot water, dawn dish soap and scrub away.

something simple that may work.... buy the arm & hammer fridge odor absorber [looks like a regular arm & hammer box], open it and leave it laying in the trunk. Baking soda is awesome. lol

Could be mold. Somewhere in your cleaning process spray the carpet down with vinegar (just straight white vinegar) and let it dry. Ammonia won't kill mold spores, but the acidity of the vinegar will. Probably want to spray down the trunk as well (while the carpet's out).
