Default Time to move on

Time to move on from Subarus. I've had enough. The crowd here in AKIC has dwindled to a bunch of sniveling crotch gazers and wannabes.
Have a good one folks.

Perhaps you'll understand the old guard's perspective on the noobs after a decade has passed.
haha I've been here for almost half that time and even I'm sick of it. Trust me, if I weren't single and didn't have a job with enough idle time to check out the boards, I wouldn't be here. I'm trying to make the best of it, though, learn from people and allow people to learn from me. It's tough when there are a bunch of stubborn, overly-sensitive noobs.

I'm surprised a lot of you schooling, married, older gentlemen still pop up around here. I wouldn't. There are so many kids here and the cars have changed so much since when you guys purchased yours. The SCENE has changed so much. If I were you guys I'd pop in strictly to sell/buy parts and collect info.

Hats off to you men for hanging in there with us.

Even though everything said yesterday could be taken lightly (april 1st)

you speak the truth. I lurk on here and post in the motorcycle thread... otherwise this place has gone downhill over the years. People who have been here longer then me will say it was downhill when I thought it was good lol.

We went from having monthly car meets/install meets and cruises... to hanging out at taco smell with the ricers and having e-penis battles.

I miss the old days. Of course running around at midnight is for the young kids, not for those with kids lol.

I've been meaning to go to the bank and see what my loan options are.

Well what changed? Isn't it up to us, the active members, to dictate the direction of the community?
I came to subie after a long but pleasant yawn fest with a mazda protege. I've yet to feel an e-penis creeping its way into a convo. I would like more meets, especially since I'm upgrading this summer, but I dont get where the general disdain comes from. I dont think theres such thing as a community of any sort, especially online, without the elitist claiming that you just missed the glory days. It was the same thing when I enlisted. Felt like I'd just missed the party.

I personally enjoy the info found here, although when I check AKIC it always feels like a 5 way convo with the same people. And when noobs try to jump in they are generally ignored or trampled by bro love.

Well, you get out what you put in, just like anything in life. AKIC isn't any different. I come on here to share info and become inspired my mods/ideas and plan for my vehicular future.

I'm hoping PotM with help bring things together just a little bit, especially with local businesses helping out with the prizes and having more than one winner. I think it'll help people feel more included.

The thing about having meets is that people don't show up to them. We did Subway Center for a bit, but it was too cold or whatever, plus people work weird hours to make ends meet. ALSO, the price of gas might have something to do with that. It's kinda like, "Who's gonna be there? I don't know them and I'm not that curious, so I'm gonna chill out at home."

I think there's a lot more to it, but basically it boils down to having someplace to meet consistently that won't be overrun by Hondas and bro trucks. Maybe Phil will start allowing us to chill at his garage more once he gets his BRZ? We can just hang around and drool as on-lookers. haha

I know JCharron mentioned an AKIC BBQ. He won't have time to set that up, but we'll have to see what we can make happen. Also we'll have to resurrect talks of Fairbanks/Seward/Homer trips.

Most of the "older" members I think have just gotten so tired with how things are they have given up trying to get things back to how they were. I can't list specific meets but have known a few that were planned, and no one showed. There are now invite only/private meets not listed here on AKIC.

I'm always open for garage meets at my house. Don't need an excuse to bbq or dig out the tools.

I too read this yesterday and was a bit perplexed and confused, as I saw it as an April fools joke, but sadly could have just as easily seen it being an honest, "peace out bitches"

I've seen the site change quite a bit as well through the years. AKIC has had its share of growing pains and drama. Seems to go in waves to be honest. Every few years a new group of people come in, some will ruffle feathers and some wont. Those that do sometimes find their way toward the exit, with the more level people (who still razz each other) tend to stick it out for one reason or another. Whether the camaraderie, seeing when Auto events are, waiting for BBQ meets, or sharing funny's or using as an outlet for being disgruntled with something.

Some of the older members (both member # wise, and age wise) have just grown out of a certain phase, or maybe some of the newer members have grown into a phase below where we were. Chilling at install meets, comparing notes at Autox events and chilling afterwards, cruising down to Gwood for grub and photo's, that's what many enjoy. Meeting up at midnight at taco bell with ALL of Anchorage HS'ers, having to not only police your own but the bro truckers/etc, meeting late at night somewhere for drifting and doughnuts just don't appeal to some of us anymore. Add to that the (perceived) mentality from some that claim sanctioned events (ice racing/Autox/tanax/rallyx) would damage their car, but freely drift around Arctic Valley and Bartlett somehow magically doesn't, adds to some members discontent.

To add to that, and perhaps is MORE the reason, and not so "anti-n00bs" is that many of the older guard has just plain moved on. Whether no longer owning a Subie, no longer live in AK, or life priorities have changed making checking in, let alone responding a low priority.

I'm down for BBQ meets at times, and hopefully sometime this summer plan to have a big AKIC/AKeuro meet at my place. HOPING to be a "Deck warming party"

I can always count on ole one trick for a belly busting laugh.

The mod path you all now enjoy was paved with hard won battles. Blown motors, broken trannies, warranty fights with Subaru, establishing a base for Continental to begin stocking aftermarket parts and the jacking up of insurance rates cause unskilled teens kept totaling the new cars their parents unwisely bought for them. Those were battles the old guard fought for those taking it for granted now days, or so it seems.

A few years later the STI's came and it was a whole new wave of battles. Some seemed to think if you didn't upgrade to a STI or get one right off that you really didn't matter. Boy, did they ever get that one wrong.

Now all of the cars can be had for pennies on the dollar and it seems every junior with a dime has one. Modding them to the hilt without any attention being paid to actually learning how to drive it properly. Just racing around public roads in poor conditions (rain, ice, gravel strewn streets) and mouthing off if anyone tries to correct their behavior. That crap gives us all bad names and makes us all prime targets for the long arm of the law.

Lots of racing events over the winter and very few faces from the younger element even showing up to take a look. What does that say about where your hearts are at? Can you begin to understand the disdain now?

There will be a ton more events coming up this summer, 10+ autocross events all over the area….will this finally be the time when you show up to show off your ride to the rest of us? Or will you continue to do your own thing in parking lots after hours?

I've organized numerous well attended events over the years. BBQ's, Salmon feeds, Lamb kabobs, Bourbon tastings, parties, dinners, private rallys…etc. Footed the bills, did the clean up, had tools go missing, dealt with people peeling out of and into my driveway, hauling ass through my neighborhood, had people act like complete asses, show up uninvited, or unannounced, had people flip their cars at my events, police show up. You name it…..Sorry, I'll be changing that format from now on….invite only after I've met you a couple times.

All in all, it has all been a good long ride. I still enjoy it but I take it all with a grain of salt anymore. I've got a great group of friends here who I enjoy. I have a sizable contingent here in AKIC that I can now share my passion (street bikes) with. We ride multiple times a week. We make plans, we see them through.

I do my best to be approachable. I challenge anyone with problems or the desire to learn something to introduce themselves and see if I can't be of benefit to you. This internet persona (Nomadgene) is just one facet. The person behind all of this is real. You might even make a new friend. I'm not perfect, never claimed to be. But I am genuine….sometimes. Thanks for listening.
