Default Rack and pinion boot leak, i think....please help

i own a 2002 impreza 2.5 rs, i noticed a burning smell yesterday and could not figure out what it was. i finally was able to track it down to something leaking onto my hot catalytic converter. the fluid, is thick and light brown, i also found that its is coming from what i think is my rack and pinion joint, i am not sure that is what it is though, i am not good with parts really. it looks like there is a crack in the rubber boot, and whatever lubrication is inside of the boot is spraying out onto the cat, as well as other parts. i took some pictures of the problem area, i circled and added text to describe whats wrong,.if you cannot read them well let me know how i can describe it. my questions are, is this going to be an expensive fix? do both sides have to be changed? can the boot only be replaced? how worried should i be about driving in this condition? any help will really be appreciated, thanks.

jeff

I think you are looking at your axle boot.

yeah it is the axle boot. you'll have to re-lube it and put a new boot on. you will have to take the axle out to do this.

unless you have had this problem for a really long time there shouldn't be any significant damage to the axle.
and if the other side isn't leaking it is fine.

Please, PLEASE,do yourself a favor. If you replace the axle don't buy an aftermarket axle. Buy a Subaru reman at the dealer. I can't begin to count how many cars with a vibration I see that have aftermarket reman axles. The axles are just a touch too long which causes the joints to wobble at the end of the races in the joint when the weight of the car is on the suspension.

If that is too much $$$ replacing the inner
boot is not hard. It's messy but not hard.
